Home baker of the week - Deviyani De Silva

An art director by profession, Deviyani de Silva states that she had always baked eclairs for fun. But despite enjoying baking eclairs and cooking in general whenever she had some time, she never thought of turning it into a business until she was convinced otherwise.

“It was our son’s idea to turn it into a small business while we were in the US visiting him last summer.”

Which food personality would you want to be reborn as?
No one in particular.

If you were to pick a reality cooking competition to take part in, what would you pick?
Even though I love watching Masterchef, I would not want to take part. For me baking is for enjoying.

You’ve been given the opportunity to bake something for your favourite celeb. Who would you pick and what would you make?
Celeb would be Celine Dion and she would get white rice, crab curry, pol sambol, dhal and vambatu moju!

What is your favourite food memory?
That would be one related to chaat.

Funniest / most embarrassing kitchen incident?
Giving a glass of water to a guest and having him spurt it out. It was vodka. We use alcohol bottles to store water. So one had found its way to the water bottle tray.

What is the most challenging ingredient you have used?
Nothing so far. But I would say coming up with new flavours for my eclairs are a challenge.

What nonexistent food combination or dish do you wish would becomes a reality?
Nothing I could think of.

What would you choose to be your “Last Supper” meal?
Kade pan, pol sambol, parippu and crab curry.
