Havelock Place Bungalow is a little boutique hotel tucked in the corners of Havelock City. Established in 2000, this boutique hotel's restaurant is open to both in-house and out-house guests for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their a la carte menu features a range of international dishes fused with Sri Lankan flavours.
Drinks
Havelock Place Bungalow offers an extensive range of beverages ranging from cocktails to mocktails, wines to champagne and tea to coffee. We opted to try their signature cocktail Blue Margarita and their signature mocktail Havelock Special at Rs. 600.
The Blue Margarita was a time old classic that we loved and the Havelock Special, a concoction of pineapple, orange, banana and coconut cream was sweet in taste and bright in colour.
Food
The food at Havelock Place Bungalow is prepared by Chef Murugan who has worked at the establishment for over 10 years. The menu offers a variety of starters, soups, mains, snacks and desserts.
For a starter, we opted for a vegetarian dish with their Spicy Stuffed Peppers with Brown Rice, Tomato and Cheese (Rs. 500). This dish is a bell pepper stuffed with brown rice capped with melted cheese on top. It's a surprisingly filling dish and the soft brown rice was a great compliment to the crunchy texture of the bell pepper. If you are looking for a meatier option however, their Kaffir Lime and Tea Smoked Chicken with avocado and wasabi cream is known to be a great starter!
For mains, we tried their Creamy Crab and Coconut Risotto (Rs. 1500). Served in a coconut shell, this is one of the best risottos I've had in a long while. Fluffy and creamy with large chunks of crab meat, this risotto was authentic in its flavours. The portion was also rather generous and can easily be shared among two people. It's a definite must try in our books!
We also tried the Sri Lankan Beef Steak (Rs.1600) which was cooked to perfection, marinated in a light sauce and served together with a handful of baby carrots and roast potatoes.
For the vegetarian, their Mushroom and Herb Crepe (Rs. 800) with tomato and coriander salsa is a recommended dish. The soft crepe was packed with button and shittake mushrooms and was held together by a creamy herb sauce that brought flavor to the dish.
As for dessert, we simply couldn't imagine trying anything other than their famous homemade ice creams and sorbets. Havelock Place Bungalow is known for their quirky innovative ice creams such as Coffee and Arrack, Cardamom and Honey and Honeycomb so we decided to try their Jaggery Ice Cream (Rs. 600) and their Passion Fruit Sorbet (Rs. 450).
The citrus from the sorbet proved to be the perfect palate cleanser and the jaggery ice cream was just the right consistency and texture. They also offer desserts like cheesecake, bread pudding and lemon tarts if you are not in the mood for an ice cream.
Ambience
Tucked away in the busy Havelock Road, it's amazing how peaceful and quiet it is at the Havelock Place Bungalow. Shut away from the noise of the city, this little spot is possibly the perfect place for something intimate and cosy.
Though the restaurant occupies only a small space, it is spaciously put together and gives customers a sense of privacy as they dine.
Service
The service here was great. Our order came within 15 minutes and we were given prompt attention by the waiters whenever we needed anything.
Overall
Overall, the Havelock Place Bungalow is a cosy little spot in the city for anyone looking for some good food and solitude!
