Big Mama’s specialises in catering for small dinner parties of eight to 10 people, while they also have lamprais available throughout the week. The lady behind the yummy food at Big Mama’s is Marie Wickrematunge who says her recipes originally stemmed from her Dutch Burgher roots (her mother was a Dutch Burgher) but she uses the Internet and recipe books and has managed to create recipes of her own, thereby creating delicious and interesting flavour combinations.
Taste and value for money (main courses and desserts) - 4 stars
We sat down to some really interesting eats which included Garlic Bread (Rs. 250 for four slices of baton bread) and a Salad (Rs. 250) with crunchy fresh greens and apples with a zesty dressing was a lovely start to our meal. Even though garlic bread is so simple it can still be flavoursome and Big Mama’s garlic bread with a hint of cumin is quite special.
One of my favourites among the dishes prepared were the Peppers stuffed with Bacon, Cheese and Egg (Rs. 250 for a stuffed half). It was creamy and full of flavour while the healthy serving of bacon in each bite made it quite a simple yet spectacular treat.
The mains included a light Chicken and Mushroom Lasagne (Rs. 500), a delectable and hearty Guinness Beef Pie (Rs. 550) and succulent slices of Roast Pork with Apple Sauce (Rs. 500).
The two stars among the three mains were the beef pie which was studded with bits of bacon while the roast pork with the sweet and zesty apple sauce and hints of clove in it were delectable.
Our three options for dessert included Passion Fruit Cream with Guava Jelly, Hot Fudge Pudding and a Mango Mousse (Rs. 350 per portion).
My pick was definitely the former as I loved the sour notes in it which were complimented beautifully with the cream as well as the sweetness of the guava which had a hint of lemon in it too.
The subtly sweet yet dense Mango Mousse was also lovely however the Hot Fudge Pudding was a little too sticky and hard for my liking.
Taste and value for money (lamprais) - 3 stars
Big Mama’s is also said to be relatively well known for their lamprais. They dish out two types of Mixed Meat Lamprais one contains Chicken, Pork, Beef and Mutton (Rs. 500)and the other option is Chicken, Beef and Mutton (Rs. 480) while she also has a Chicken Lamprais (Rs. 470).
In all honesty this isn’t your traditional lamprais, it is more a fusion one and chances are you will either love it for its uniqueness or dislike it for its overpowering flavour notes. The best aspect for me was the blachan which was quite fresh but it failed to satisfy my lamprais craving.
