6 Avurudu/Puththandu Gift Ideas For The 11th Hour Shopper

There's a reason certain festival traditions don't die down, although we readily discard the majority of traditions our forefathers have continued for generations. One word: gifts. Let's face it, there's nothing most of us look forward to when it comes to festivals other than gifts. And maybe the food. But mostly the gifts.

While receiving is fun, so is the giving. Without a question, the festive high and atmosphere gets us in the mood to be generous. But as it happens, you end up getting caught up in the whirlwind of festive activities that you forget. Or maybe you're just a master procrastinator. Either way, before you know it, you're just few days away from Avurudu/Puththandu and you haven't grabbed any gifts for anyone. As panic mode sets in, out goes any semblance of rational thinking and you end up buying gifts you will soon regret. You'll also probably break your bank while at it.

So we've compiled a pretty general list of gift ideas that just might save you the aggravation of having to rack your brain in the last minute. You're welcome.

1. Gift Vouchers

While some may think gift vouchers are a tad impersonal, it's actually pretty great for the receiver who can buy something of their choice instead of being given something they don't actually like and can do nothing about (except maybe regift it later on. And hopefully, not back to you). From clothing to jewellery to spa treatments and everything between, you will be spoilt for choice!

2. Food

We know your table is overflowing with kavums and kokis and kesari and laddoos, and the same can be said about those of your recipients too. Still, you can almost never go wrong with food (unless you’re a pr*ck who gives a peanut butter cookie to someone who's allergic to peanuts. We say pr*ck because the receivers are your “loved ones”. You should know these things okay?). From hotels to bakeries to home bakers your options are as wide as the fare on offer.

3. Jewellery

While jewellery makes for a great gift and one that you can quickly grab at the very last minute, it will, without a doubt break your bank. So unless you're willing to dish out the dough, you could opt for handcrafted pieces that not only look great, but are also unique, fun and quirky.

4. Assorted Candles

Candles are pretty utilitarian. Something you probably witnessed recently during the power cuts - where there was a mad dash to the candles everywhere. While we sincerely hope that power cuts will be a thing of the past, candles - especially scented ones etc. - make for thoughtful gifts. Just make sure not to select candles with strong scents and opt for lighter scents like jasmine instead that will appeal to everyone.

5. Pamper Kit

Nothing says you appreciate someone like a pamper package. Thankfully, there are many places you can grab one from!

6. A Donation To A Charitable Organisation

This doesn't require any shopping per se, nevertheless, some people can be a little difficult to please. So it might be a great idea to make a donation to a charitable organisation of their choice in their name. It's a feel good gift, and everyone wins in the end. What's not to love?
