What – Things to do in Wellawatte
Where – Colombo 6
Today on WTF I go back to where I lived 16 years of my life, I'm a Wellawatta boy, as we came to Colombo from Jaffna when we moved there for school. But I must say it's a world of its own and everything is just a hop, step and jump away.
Wellawatte the town begins at the old Dutch canal just before the Savoy Cinema and extends all the way south to the same canal that spills into the sea just before the Hospital Road junction where Dehiwela begins. And it lies immediately south of Bambalapitiya and is classified as zone 6 within the Colombo Municipal region.
We took my journey in a tuk tuk that took me around for nearly 10 years and our very loved Raja, and it felt great.
Our journey starts with the best place to eat. Samosas located on top of Vihara Lane Colombo 6. Then we walked down the lane to see the temple which has a 200 year history, followed by a visit to the Sri Saneeswaram Temple, followed by a visit to the most popular church - St. Lawrence's Church, with its amazing architecture. I'm still a parishioner at this church. On the way we visted the most expensive market, where bargaining is always a mess, and prices are always way over the top. Then the Wellawatte Jumma Mosque which is quite busy this season with Ramadan and we finished it off with a good faluda at the Bombay Sweet Center located at the entrance of W.A. Silva Mawatha - a place you should try!
Wellawatte is always busy, with a buzz of busy people with a messy outlook, and the most convenient place to live in. Even Koluu lives in Wellawatte.
