What – V Day : Our Stories
Where – Barefoot
When – 31.03.15
Today on WTF I wanted to bring you the best of V Day that took place at the Barefoot on the last day of March - a production that was inspired by true stories and stories that will leave you with some deep thoughts. The Grassrooted Trust, in partnership with Uber Minds and Women In Need presented stories on gender-based violence, including intimate partner violence.
V Day was born out of Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues. It traditionally starts on Valentine's Day - V, and also discusses violence – V. Multiple interpretations are possible. For us too, the V is whatever you want it to mean in relation to the gender based and intimate partner violence that make up the performances. And this year there are Three V Days, for the first time - a predominantly Sinhala V Day coming up in Kandy in August, followed by a Tamil V Day in Jaffna in November.
Speaking to Hans Billimoria, Director, The Grassrooted Trust and Co-Director of V Day.
Danu - What is this year’s V Day all about?
Hans - Stories that make up V Day are based on real violence that people have told us about, and what you may find unbelievable or unimaginable are actually not as graphic or descriptive as the real experiences we gathered through the submissions and interviews.
And to Jith Peiris, Co-Director of the production.
Danu - How has it been working with all the powerful actors?
Jith - They may be powerful, but they are also playful and I’m happy to work with such a cast to give out a good message though V Day.
The 9 skits spoke of some very strong pieces and if you had missed it, WTF brings you the best on our exclusive video this week!
