The Castle Hotel with Dilruk Jayasinha

What - The Castle Hotel

Where - Masjidul Jamiah Road, Colombo 2

When - 5PM to 11PM (but you can walk in anytime)

Who - Dilruk Jayasinha

Today on WTF we’ve brought in many elements. First let me speak to you about my WHO feature. As a Sri Lankan and a fellow Peterite, I'm so proud of his great achievements. Dilruk Jayasinha is someone I once shared a stage with back in 2001 when we did Macbeth for the Shakespeare Drama competition. I was a maid he flirted with and he was the vegetarian king.

After moving to Australia at the age of 19, Dilruk was well on his way toward making his parents proud by making good use of his Finance and Accounting degree, when in 2009 he was unceremoniously fired by one of the Big Four accounting firms. But just like the company, even he knew what he was born to do!

Dil promptly jumped to his first gig in September 2010 and hasn’t looked back since. A regular across the Melbourne comedy circuit, you would be hard pressed to go a week without seeing Dil’s name on the bill at the best rooms in the city. Consistently nailing his shows in Melbourne, Dil has been invited to perform all over the country as well as internationally with headline spots in KL, Penang and Singapore. He’s also performed at five Melbourne International Comedy Festivals and he’ll be returning in 2016 with his smash hit show from this year’s Melbourne Fringe Sri Wanka.

In 2014, Dil scored his first prime time comedy spot for SBS where he appeared in their Stand Up at Bella Union series and in 2015, he was a part of ABC TV’s highly anticipated six part series of Sammy J and Randy in Ricketts Lane in the recurring role of Michael Jayasinha. From Sri Lanka to Australia, this man has made us all proud.

So I wanted bring this comedian to join me as I did this week’s episode. In our shoot, we incorporated The BRA as it's very close to our hearts. Like at any boys’ school we had to stuff our chest to play the female roles, and we made it creative and stuffed our bras on the day of performances with "Malu Pang" (fish buns).

As disgusting as this may sound, it did happen.

After a failed attempt at asking people what they think about BRAS, we moved to see how many different ways in which we could use a BRA. You need to understand two guys in the early stages of puberty buying bars for a play with their moms, can be a challenge. Dilruk and I share our painful stories on the video.

Dilruk joined me as we visited The Castle Hotel. This 200 year old building still stands with a majestic look. It is also quite central, right near the Slave Island railway station. You can have a cheap drink with some fancy bites.

We chose the Devilled Beef (Rs. 400) and the Hot Cuttlefish (Rs.400). Dil said, "The best cuttlefish I had enjoyed in some time."

We spoke to the manager Mr. Wickramasinghe who said, "This has been in existence for the past 200 years and for 175 years we have kept this running." They have rooms upstairs. I WILL not use them, but they’re still given out, says the manager to their "Regular Clients".

Speaking to a regular there, Shantha Perera, we were told, "I come here every day and I have to visit this place before I have my rice and curry for dinner".

For the best service, you can ask for Solomon, his service is excellent. He’s there for you at any time, and he also a bit shy. I'm sure the men around the bar where confused as to why two BIG men walked in with a PINK Bra and a camera - that would explain why Solomon was shy or shocked!

The interior is questionable, it can look a bit creepy, and the setting is crumbly and not clean. The place also houses a few cats, and one cat is missing it's eye! Not a nice thing to see when you have the cuttlefish in your mouth.

WTF finds this place an interesting experience to have in life, and if you have someone funny like Dilruk, ask them to join you too!

Hope you enjoy our WTF today!
