Today on WTF, we speak to Nazeem Hussain of “Legally Brown” fame as he comes for a walk with me and the WTF team. “Legally Brown” by Nazeem Hussain was held in Sri Lanka on January 17 at SLECC, and the show was a great success and I thought 80% of his humour did me crack up. As I had to open the show, I also needed a reason to get to know him, so with WTF in mind, we took him to Galle Face Green to live the true Sri Lankan life, with his beautiful wife Shaheeda Abdulla and family.
The first stop was at my favourite place - the isso vadei shop, where every bite makes me ask for more. As he had never tried it before all he asked me was “Danu, I have a show in three days. I hope I won’t be stuck in the loo!” Speaking to me about his passion for comedy, he said although his profession was law, his life on stage making people laugh is his true passion! He added that the support he gets from his family makes it more special.
Nazeem Hussain is an Australian comedian, actor, and radio presenter of Sri Lankan-Muslim descent. He is best known as the creator and star of the comedy show “Legally Brown”. He was excited about bringing his humour and way of thinking to Sri Lanka!
Prior to "Legally Brown", Hussain was a regular on the Comedy Channel’s hugely successful, ASTRA award-winning "Balls of Steel Australia". His self-created character, Calvin Khan - the Very Foreign Correspondent, saw his episodes achieve the highest ratings of the season and he returned in Season 2. Hussain also starred on the cult-hit “Salam Café” on SBS, which was nominated for a Logie Award in 2009.
Then teaching my Sri Lankan roots to him, I showed him how Nana's do their kottu and what a snack in Sri Lanka is like! I showed him the addictive Tipitip and he was amazed at how cheap and tasty it was!
From there, my next stop was at the achcharu place, and spoke to his new wife Shaheeda Abdulla who's visiting Sri Lanka for the first time. Nazeem has been in love with from the time they were in university, and their love story was made possible by Nando's and the love that Nazeem had for it.
“He saw me working there, flipping chicken and I feel as though that was the start,” said Shaheeda and then Nazeem added “When I saw her flipping the chicken I told myself, “She should be my wife!”
Then I asked her the most important question: "Do you find Nazeem your husband funny?". She replied “He is funny, but he can be annoying at times. But I do love what he does!”. And she smiled innocently. Well, the achcharu did not go down so well with her, but he loved the pieces of mango.
Then, I spoke to the ever so proud Dad, who dropped an embarrassing secret about Nazeem, and how much he has a fetish for his wife’s ear. Well, that just shocked Nazeem. But the Dad said he was so excited about his son's show in Colombo. He added “I'm so proud of him, and he was a quiet boy when he was a kid, he still is and maintains two different personalities when he is on and off stage.”
And the WTF video produced by You're My Favorite will capture the best of our times together.
