Today on WTF, I felt it was time to sort out the biggest question when you are at work, and that's what to get for lunch! It's always an issue, and having something good and affordable is a combination you will very rarely come across.
STOP 1
We went to Walukarama Road in Colombo 3, and met Mahindha from the popular food joint “Little Food Cabin”. This place gives you a big spread for lunch, from fried fish to even black pork curry, and the chicken lunch I bought was priced at Rs. 150. I loved the flavours in the stir-fried capsicum. I will have that alone with the rice. “We have all kinds of people who visit our shop, from offices to even school kids, and we keep our food clean,” said Mahindha the owner. But they have some in-house made drinks which looked a bit dodgy, and if I was you I will not try it!
STOP 2
I drove by to Gangarama - a very central place full of big offices close by, and I met two guys from the Gangarama temple selling lunch packets which are cooked at the temple itself. I met Prasanna and Madushanka who sell vegetarian lunch packs, priced at Rs. 50. l love the fact that it's super affordable and the fact that it comes from a temple means it's clean. I loved the flavours as well. “We make around 400 packs for a day, and it's always a sell-out,” said Prasanna.
STOP 3
I went by the famous yellow and blue truck, located down Hunupitiya Lake Road, and met Shantha, who used to own a shop close by and was then given the food truck by the government. “I sell lunch packets which are given by many suppliers, and I have packs starting from Rs. 100 and above,” said Shantha. And there came Gihan who travels all the way from Fort just so he can enjoy the food that “Shantha” gives. I must tell you that you need to try the butter cake, much better than a five star hotel!
STOP 4
Copper Chimney, located at W. A. D Ramanayaka Mawatha, Colombo 2, is probably Slave Island's most best known fried rice joint. It's a little buth kade that has mastered the art of frying up fried rice. It is open only for lunch, and it's affordable. The fried rice with fried chicken is just Rs. 140, while the vegetable option is just Rs.60, but you don’t get it all the time. The chicken and egg fried rice is priced at Rs.90 for take away and isRs.80 if you're dining in. For Rs.10, they add more colour to your lunch by providing some chillie paste and something that looks and taste very different to ketchup. You can go and meet Laminda and Janaka who are always busy at work, and take less than a minute to pack your lunch up.
STOP 5
Then for a pricey choice, I visited The Cafe located at 410, Deans Road, Colombo 10, and they ONLY cater to the offices close by. They stay closed on all mercantile holidays and Sundays. The boss who does not want his face on the newspapers says that they work according to your calendar. The bestseller is the Nasi Goreng – and it's enough for two and one more who is on a diet, and is priced at Rs. 400.
And finally as I got to work, I enjoyed my lunch from My Sister's Kitchen. You can never go wrong with a lunch packed with love from my only family - my Akka!
So hope you liked the places we picked out for you. Try it, and let us know.
