What - Pyramus & Thisby
Where - Lionel Wendt
When - November 19 & 20
Who - Jehan Aloysius

This week on WTF, I went to meet The Fairies who are back at Jehan Aloysius' brother's house as they were rehearsing at his house for the new run of the well reserved play Pyramus & Thisby.

As someone who has always enjoyed local talent, I'm proud to say that Pyramus & Thisby has been chosen to represent Sri Lanka from over 500 applications at the 18th Bharat Rang Mahotsav in Delhi, India - which is recognized as the third largest theatre festival in the world.

The outrageous fairies that took Colombo by storm in their previous attack are back with their wild and wonderful adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The fairies claim that they have been summoned back from the deep forests of Sri Lanka to tickle, tease and titillate Colombo audiences once more, this time at the Lionel Wendt, Colombo, on November 19 and 20 at 7.30 p.m.

I have always admired the work that Jehan does, and he is born to produce magic on stage. I'm creating monuments that will leave you speechless and his talent and commitment to theatre is admirable - and for those who have missed out on watching this play before, the plot revolves around a group of artisans, headed by Quince, as they rehearse a play titled Pyramus & Thisby in the forest. A battle between the armies of the Fairy King and Queen over the mystical Indian boy and the machinations of the mischievous ‘Puck’, lead to chaos in the human world. Meanwhile, ‘Bottom’, the weaver, becomes the unwitting victim of a magical transformation which leads him into the arms of the mesmerized Fairy Queen. In all this mayhem, the artisans wonder if they will ever be able to stage their tragicomedy - Pyramus & Thisby!

The first run of Pyramus & Thisby was unanimously hailed as a groundbreaking achievement in Sri Lankan theatre. And I was happy to witness it, and every time it leaves me wanting for more. The show has been described by critics as “a scintillating spectacle …a feast of colour, sound and emotion – a veritable treat for all the senses.” The show’s creator, Jehan Aloysius, states, “We were humbled by the response of the audiences, critics and academics.” Indeed, critics have even written that “Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was never so creatively adapted in Sri Lanka,” while other critics described the show as “a night to remember… a lasting impression on Sri Lankan theatre… a theatrical success.”

The producers state that this rerun is especially for all those who missed the previous runs as well as their fans who have been clamouring to see it again. So make a date with Pyramus & Thisby on November 19 & 20 at the Wendt and experience a night to remember. And your purchase of the tickets will also help the cast represent Sri Lanka in India with no financial stress - so make sure you get there and enjoy this colourful treat.
