This week, WTF took a long walk down The Floating Market. As the shops started closing down at the Design Market, it was time to witness what was on the runway for ArtWalk 2015. What was the thinking behind ArtWalk? It’s a fusion of design and art on the ramp. The models act as live canvases for creative expression. ArtWalk is a bold showcase that provokes thought and empowers emerging talent.
“It is a project that is and always will be very close to my heart,” says Anjali (the founder). It is a platform that must be made available, without discrimination to all aspiring creatives. The production is meant to inspire and motivate participants and audiences to push themselves. There is no wrong or right way to interpret the showcase, as long as it is honest.
Speaking to me about what made her start ArtWalk, a brand that I love, Anjuli says, “When I graduated from university and moved back to Sri Lanka, I noticed there was an apparent gap in the market of graduates transitioning into the professional realm. There were limited options to experiment and gain exposure and experience in the creative industry. There were no projects for young people to discover who they really were and what they wanted to become. I founded ArtWalk to bridge this gap.”
This year, the show faced many obstacles that worked against the team that put ArtWalk together, rain being the biggest issue - the location became an uncomfortable place for people to sit and enjoy the show, but I sure liked the fact that the Floating Market was the venue, as it was a bold and an interesting place for a show like this. A few things that could have made the show better could have been the duration, cos it felt like forever after some time and the host for the evening made many in the audience frown, and made the transition to each segment painful.
When I asked Anjuli, “What do you want audiences to take away from the event?” she replied, “I want audiences to be filled with the power of possibility and to be empowered by the confidence and creativity displayed at the event. I hope that the audience recognises the raw talent that exists amongst Sri Lankan youth and this motivates them to cultivate it. My goal is to provide the necessary resources and narrative for artists/designers/models who wish to be seen and heard.”
I personally love this concept. It gives a chance for many to show their talent, from modelling to designing and this breaks the traditions of art, and makes us take a creative journey without putting art in a BOX. SO I’m proud of Anjuli for taking this creative step forward.
In places like these, we find new talent who will make it to the world of fashion. Anjuli is now in the process of starting something for new modelling talent from across the island called the “Agency Search”. Applications are open now!
