Where - Pettah, Colombo 11
When - Any day
I have always been fascinated with Pettah, Colombo 11. My mom and sister love the word 'Pettah', especially during the Christmas season. My question has always been “WHY?” because I’m not very good with crowded places anyway, and even though you can buy most things at an affordable price there, I'd rather shop in comfort than shopping in pain.
With WTF on my shoulder, I had no choice but to make my ever reluctant way to Pettah. If you stop and look at the place, it looks chaotic and mad, with the streets being packed inch to inch by trishaws, people and even cars that may leave you dead. But if you know Pettah and know what to get where, you can walk away with some very cool stuff at surprising prices and also the fact they have so many novelty items, we thought we will stick to that. But I must say, that I sure did enjoy my walk around the busy streets.
I started on a good note, with a box full of achcharu for just Rs.200, and even took the challenge to do some selling by myself.
1. Bontex Underwear for Rs. 200
2. Suitin Martine, Kids Outfit for Rs. 150
3. Beavers Ball (One odd toy) for Rs. 300
4. Alice band for Rs. 50
5. Crown for Rs. 75
Then I had to walk into more shops to see what else I could pick up and add to my interesting collection. I walked into the multichoice shop full of odd things, down 2nd Cross Street, where I bought a neck massager for Rs. 200. And when I was about to walk out, I met a fan of the WTF column, and that’s Mr. Aruse, from who I had a long chat about business, and inquired how the new year has been treating them. He said “December 2015 was a great month, but January is always slow. I'm sure it will pick by the end of February”. And there I went in for a makeover and got myself a wig for Rs. 450.
But the walks down the busy streets are always exciting, as there is some conversation that will keep you smiling, and I even got to play cricket. And as a child I have always enjoyed the oily, unhealthy doughnut which is transported by a man on a bike, and there I found him. His name is Chinthaka and I gave in and ate one which cost me Rs. 35. I think he overpriced it just because my hair was done. So far, my total cost from shopping in Pettah was Rs. 1460.
So, every street has a reason, and why you need to visit them:
Electronics: 1st Cross Street, Prince Street
Stationery: Maliban Street, 2nd Cross Street
Leather: Front Street, Main Street
Toys: Prince Street
Clothes, shoes, bags: Front Street, Main Street, 2nd Cross Street
Party stuff: China Street
Vegetables and fruits: 5th Cross Street Market
So next time, when you visit Pettah, you can not only get all the important things, but also try and look out for and and get some novelty items. I know you don't need them, but sometime it's good to shop for them!
