Where - Nugegoda and Delkanda
When - Sunday
Today on WTF we took a step into the real world, to see what it's like to face life today, and we all know that the cost of living is a battle we face everyday. So we wanted to see what we can buy and how we can battle our day today basic essentials.
Stop 1 - Nugegoda Pola
I spoke to Anton, who says life has been hard for some time, as people have reduced the amount of shopping they do, and especially after the rain, so I asked him to give me a bag of vegetables for Rs.500 and I was not left with much.
I got the following:
½ a cabbage
4 carrots
3 eggplants
5 ladies fingers
3 limes
A few green chillies
Three tomatoes
So this bag will do for 3 days in an average house, and that’s all.
And then I moved to my favourite place for dry fish, with Pradeep. His prices have not gone up, but he feels that the crowd has dropped drastically, and back in the day Sunday would be a busy day for the sellers at Pola.
But it's nice that they have a place to buy everything fresh, and the camera and the loud team of King Co. did make them happy. I even tried selling some fruits, and it was an amazing experience. They did think I was an animal off some zoo, but I got some business going.
Stop 2 - Delkanda Pola
Our next stop was at the next most popular Delkanda Pola, I love this place, and my Sunday was made at this place - full of colour and excitement with smiles!
Here I met one cute family, where the two boys won my heart. They had come to spend time with their parents selling fruits. “Business is slow these days,” said the mother Devika but it's amazing that they still keep the smiles alive.
So if you nered to experience the life of the common man, get yourself to one of the many Polas which are out there, and you also end up helping a family.
