Today on WTF , I got my hands dirty with some freak shake, it was the most thrilling experience for me for this week, and it’s rewarding to see it messy and of course tasty! Who serves up the BEST of its kind? Well it’s at Aura Café.
I asked Malisha why she wanted to put this up. She replied saying “I've always loved food and restaurants and I have been a regular at some Colombo restaurants since I was a child. My sister and I would head out to eat together on dinner dates even as adolescents. Friends have told me and my family that watching me eat is highly arousing and makes everyone feel super hungry. So yeah, I'm extremely passionate about food."
She added “This is why I've always imagined I would get into the hospitality business one day but never thought it would be my first entrepreneurial adventure. After all, I studied Economics at the University of Melbourne. I soon realised that I would not make a happy banker so I decided to enrol at the William Angliss Institute in Melbourne to study Hospitality Management. I think that was one of the best decisions I've made thus far, and I've never been more engrossed in a field of study.”
The place is cosy and welcoming, and love the fact that it’s a set of old containers which have become this yummy place full of food, they focus on making comfort food at its best! The finest natural ingredients are used to make the dishes with a focus on eliminating plastic, chemicals and preservatives in the production process. But one thing they do not compromise on is taste.
From there we went into the tasting process. Well, I don’t fuss about it!
1. The Very Peri Salad (Rs. 865) (****)
This involved peri peri chicken, avocado, sun dried tomatoes, feta cheese, salad mix, and a Peri Peri dressing. I loved this, as it was fresh, crunchy and just refreshing.
2. Pulled to Perfection (Rs. 635) (*****)
This consisted of a pulled jakfruit patty in a smoky BBQ sauce crumbed and fried, served with the signature herbed Aura fries. The fries are the bomb, something you must try, and I have never tasted something like this.
3. Grilled Fish Fillet With Roast Potato And Grilled Vegetables (Rs. 990) (****)
This is a new addition to the menu where you can pick your protein - grilled fish, chicken breast or chicken leg, and pick 2 sides from grilled veggies - roast potato, mashed potato, cauliflower tabbouleh & garden salad. The fish was very well done.
4. Creamy Sorbets (Rs. 180) (****)
The sorbets come in three flavours of raspberry, passion fruit and lime. We tried the Passion Fruit and Raspberry, and my personal choice was passion fruit.
5. Aura Freakshake (Rs.900)
This is what I did, and we also did a video on the making of it! It’s a messy drink but with a big sense of fulfillment. It’s a simple drink but so worth the calories! The Aura Freakshake is a chocolate milkshake topped with cream, brownies, marshmallows, strawberries and wafers with chocolate sauce drizzled over the top.
And the WTF #shockshake WILL BE OUT SOON!
When you go there next time you need to meet the chef, Chef Medha. He is everything that Aura ever wanted as a head chef. “He is young, incredibly talented, passionate and willing to take risks. But mostly he's just a really nice guy. They all are actually. Team Aura is a gaggle of laidback, friendly, supportive and genuine people.” says Malisha.
