Today on WTF, I took a brave step in trying something new that will give you a WTF reaction. I always wanted to know how hard it might be to dress as a Hindu bride, as there are a million things which get on a bride on her BIG day, but she sure does look like a goddess. So I wanted to put myself to the challenge, and try and fit in to a Tamil bride’s shoes on her special day!
I wanted to work with the the best, and I was happy to work with the very calm Dr. Anusha who has made her mark in the industry. Possessing technique, passion, personality and professionalism, she heads her very successful Anusha Herbal Beauty Care in Wellawatta. Anusha is a Qualified Pranic Healer and a Qualified Reiki practitioner, who obtained a Doctorate from the International University for Martial Arts, and holds the international bronze certificate for hair techniques by OMC World. These are just a few in her long list of internationally recognized certificates.
She had to break a lot of rules, and I hold the record as the first man she has ever dressed. Although she has dressed over a thousand and dealt with many odd and outrageous requests, the most requested I’m told is “I want to look fair” but Anusha says “I like to keep the original beauty of the bride, and make her feel her best, as it’s her big day!”
I was told it will be a three hour process, and I didn't sit through it all the way to 100%, but I felt the strain it can have on one person. Just on the head you carry close to 1kg of fine workmanship, from the headdress to the flowers, and the long braided hair, which is a 6 gathered plait.
Here is a list of things that end up on a bride:
Tikka
Earrings
Maatal
Head gear
Necklace
Long chain 1 & 2
Hip chain
Vangi (single)
Vangi (pair)
Finger set
Nose ring
Sun & moon
Face net
Jadai - 2
Hair extensions
Anusha also says that if we have ever wondered why a Tamil bride keeps her head down, most of the time, she says “it’s the weight of the head dress”. I now must agree!
So although the challenge was interesting, it took a lot off me, including a few sides off my eyebrows, and my manly beard. Now my look is like a 5 year old child!
