This week, WTF came by to see me act with a super cast during a rehearsal of Playing Doctor. As Daily Mirror Life supports this special production we are happy to bring you some behind-the-scenes details of what’s happening!
The Combined Theatre Company in arrangement with Samuel French Inc., presents ‘Playing Doctor’, a rib-tickling comedy at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. This will be the 60th production of Director Vinodh Senadeera, a significant milestone indeed. Working with Vinodh is great, and he is such a foodie so we are all quite well fed, therefore expect to see a FULL cast on stage! Apart from his very involved theatre life, he is also a master chef, and sometimes I feel that that’s what keeps me going for rehearsals!
Speaking to Vinodh about the play he says that it’s been an absolutely fantastic experience working with experienced actors.
So what is this play about, and what’s the storyline all about? So there is this person named Rob Brewster and his parents are very, very proud of their son the doctor. What they don't know is that Rob has used all the money they gave him for medical school to live on as he as has pursued his fledgling writing career and this is played by Shanaka, and knowing HIM this is believable. Inevitably, Rob's day of reckoning comes when his parents arrive for a visit. Quickly, he enlists the help of his secretary to be his nurse and his roommate Jimmy to round up his actor friends to pretend to be patients. Complications ensue when Jimmy decides he is such a good actor that he can impersonate all the patients, with the help of a trunk of costumes and bad dialects!
It’s a happy play, a play for the family, and it’s beautifully timed. You will be done with it soon, so that you can go enjoy a meal with the family.
‘Playing Doctor’ will be the first production of The CTC after an 11-year hiatus. Over the years, the CTC has identified the potential for the growth of the Arts, in areas of Sri Lanka, where funding is scarce and skills development is lacking. Their vision isn’t to make a one-time contribution to this development but to create and sustain a platform for deserving but destitute individuals. In this regard, the proceeds of this production, will be utilised under the guidance of an approved charity, to develop visual art and crafts in Kalpitiya. An exhibition to reflect the effects of this development will be held annually from 2017.
'Playing Doctor' will go on the boards at the Wendt on the 15th, 16th and 17th July at 7.30pm.
