The heavy sea breeze, the passing trains all add to the ambiance. Mount Lavinia Hotel comes with a broken love story, great hospitality and good yummy food.
I was fortunate enough to work with this young chap, called Dinuka Boralassa who was my point of contact throughout my stay.
My Friday night started off with the sunset at "The Governor's Restaurant" for a signature buffet, where the spread celebrates both international and local cuisines.
I woke up on Saturday in my comfy room where my very own welcome teddy bear was there to make me feel right at home. I used my Saturday to play explorer as the hotel is steeped in history and lore. Did you know that the Mount Lavinia Hotel has its own museum? The museum has memorabilia from the past like old menus, coconut scrapers and other interesting tit-bits that will take you back in time.
I then took a break from the explorations to drop by the Coco Spa. Trained Balinese masseurs give you the most authentic experience. Another treat at the spa is the sea view you can enjoy while being transported to a place of relaxation and tranquillity.
For lunch, if you want to check out some other option than the buffet (although the buffet spread is amazing), you can ask for the a la carte menu, which has it all, from Nasi Goreng to the one foot hot dog!
Mount Lavinia Hotel has been in service for a whopping 210 years. I felt everyone at the hotel is a happy employee; they smile and genuinely want to make you feel comfortable, welcome and relaxed. It's a colonial heritage hotel, right by the beach, rooted in the love story of a colonial governor and the local beauty Lavinia. Their sad tale of love is what makes the hotel truly special. It is our version of the Taj Mahal. He may not have built a marble monument, but he did build a tunnel, and made the statement 'work for your love' come alive.
The infamous tunnel starts near the reception and is dark and narrow where you have to bend in two, as you walk through. As I made my way through, I had to wonder what it meant back in the day for a man of that status to fall in love, with a simple girl who was a dancer and leave a story that in 2017 I will write about.
For my Saturday night dinner at The Seafood Cove the sea breeze was my date. The Seafood Cove let's you choose your dish of choice from the fresh catch displayed on trays of ice. You can enjoy the romance of the beach in candlelit splendour.
At The Governor's Restaurant I had the best seat in the house: The chairman's seat! My final day started with the most popular Sunday Breakfast Buffet which has everything from Sri Lankan to international, to the croissants to the doughnuts that melt in your mouth. And if you can walk after that, you can get to the The Governor's Restaurant again for the signature Sunday Brunch. Again it is a battle with yourself to conquer this great food marathon.
Finally as the sun set over the horizon I sat back and relaxed, with my tray of high tea at The Terrace quoted by Newsweek magazine as 'the world's best gathering place'.
The cherry on the cake is the fact that they have 4 different chefs from four different parts of the world, which gives every spread a multinational feel. Chef Singh, Chef Micheal, Chef Upul and Chef Jason are the stars that make all these gastronomical marvels possible.
