When - November 11 - 13
This week, WTF visited the WINGS festival which was a celebration of art, conversation and food that brought citizens from all backgrounds to contribute to an imagining of reconciliation as a multifaceted, participatory process. The festival begins in October in Kilinochchi, and then travels to Ampara in November, culminating in Colombo with a festival that showcases a range of artistic work, an academic conference and an open air food fair.
We went with our cameras to the open air food fair, building on our rich history of spices, flavours, and influences, which showcased the diverse cuisines and traditions of the different ethnicities and communities around the country; showcasing not only the food but also the diversity of lifestyles and beliefs.
Amazing stories is what I got to hear, but there were the very popular Colombo stalls too to add more to the fair. It was a few days of celebrating the flavours of Sri Lanka. ‘A Taste of Harmony' presented the diverse cuisines and traditions in one culinary fair. With over 100 stalls, the food fair featured cuisines from different ethnic groups around the country, showcasing not only the food but also the diversity of lifestyles and beliefs. And coming to think of it, it’s the only way you can bridge any broken wounds, it's was great to see the country unite as one and enjoy the flavours at one dining table.
I met a few amazing people, and one person who really touched my heart was K. Sajirani, all the way from Mullaitivu. She was a simple lady with an amazing story. She has worked on using all natural greens to add nutrition to the young girls and boys who go off to school, such as Samaposha and even papadam using carrots and beetroot, so today on WTF, we bring some good monuments off our tasty walk.
