Will Smith is set to make his directorial debut with 'The Redemption of Cain'.

The actor is lining up the project - which tells the story of Biblical characters Cain and his brother Abel - as both a vehicle for him to direct and star in, according to Deadline.

According to the Bible, Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve with the former committing the first murder by killing his brother.

The original title for the film was 'The Legend of Cain' but it is believed the movie will now be a sympathetic portrayal after the word legend was changed to redemption.

'World Trade Center' writer Andrea Berloff is rewriting Will's brother-in-law Caleeb Pinkett's original script, which had Cain as a vampire, for Will's Overbrook Entertainment company.

Will is enjoying a highly successful period in his career at the moment - after taking some time out to focus on his children's acting and singing ambitions - with the news that 'Men In Black 3' has become the highest grossing film of the trilogy

The movie raked in $599.4 million and became the most successful in the popular series about special agents battling to save the world from alien invasion.

The film has more than doubled the return on its $225 million budget since its May release, a relief after 'Men In Black II' was a flop with the critics ten years ago.

It now seems that 'Men In Black 4' could be in the pipeline since Tommy Lee Jones, who plays Will Smith's partner in crime Agent K, recently stated he would be keen to film a follow-up.

When asked if he was looking forward to 'Men In Black 4', he joked: "I hope we can start tomorrow.

"I've only seen 'Men In Black 3' in the form of rough work print. Josh seemed to have done a fine job. I thought it was just fine."
