                                   WHAT'S COOKING - A Housewife's Diary

SUNDAY   Make a difference. Just say "No" to plastic bags. Every year more than 500 billion plastic bags are distributed, and less than three per cent of those bags are re-cycled. They are typically made of polyethylene   and can take up to 1000 years to biodegrade in landfill that emit harmful greenhouse gases. Reducing your contribution to plastic bag pollution is as simple as using a cloth bag (or one made of biodegradable plant based materials) instead of wasting on plastic ones. Over 100,000 marine animals die every year from plastic entanglement.

MONDAY This made interesting reading. They say the human brain is at its most receptive when it is young. It has even been suggested that "three fourths of what we know as adults, we learned in childhood”. Certainly, these early learning years are crucial to a child's educational development.

TUESDAY Do you know what is Garam Masala? it is a mixture of coriander seeds, cumin seeds, peppercorns, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.

WEDNESDAY This is a quick and easy whipped non-fat milk topping you can use for desserts. Mix quarter cup instant non-fat milk powder with half cup ice cold water in a bowl or electric mixer. Add one Tblsp lime or lemon juice; beat in mixer till peaks form. Beat in 2 Tblsp sugar. (or you can use a hand held electric beater). Serve chilled. It must be beaten just before serving time or it will flop.

THURSDAY The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says "a spoonful of cinnamon helps to lower blood sugar. “Cinnamon slows the rate at which food passes from the stomach to the intestines, it was explained. They recommend adding a spoonful of cinnamon to most desserts.

FRIDAY According to a Sri Lankan doctor, Pol Sambol cannot raise cholesterol levels. Apparently, only animal fats cause high cholesterol. This was a matter of great satisfaction to me, as one of my favourites is buttered bread and Pol Sambol. Incidentally, I tried buttered bread and Katta Sambol and found it to be just as good.

SATURDAY  “What is it to cease breathing  but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise  and expand and seek God unencumbered".Kahlil Gibran.
