Globally renowned Lanka’s ace audio engineer makes sound impact

Malinda Lowe. This name features in the credits of the biggest hits in the music scene, but this modest guy prefers to let his work speak for him.

Malinda Lowe who started his career as a teenager boasts of an invincible track record by all accounts and today is the most sought after audio engineer by top globally renowned artistes who perform here.

Among the top names who had sought the services of Malinda in the audio designing for their recent hit shows in Sri Lanka are Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Olivia Newton John, Mohombi and Iyaz, Leo Sayer, Billy Ocean, and all top events like the Colombo Night Races, the SLPL opening show, Carlton Super Sevens etc.

Enthusiastically explaining the many processes involving in sound designing, which eventually brings the treat to your ear Malinda said music had been his passion from his early childhood.

“I was earlier involved in post productions, then I moved onto live productions including mixing at Marians studio. I studied the subject of audio engineering at Harman International Business School in California. I followed a comprehensive course on Audio engineering endorsing Harman products and also sat for digital mixing exams in Bangalore with top Indian audio engineers. I got the second highest marks at the final exam,” said Malinda who is delighted about the interest for audio engineering among today’s youth.

“Today’s young generation in particular is keen about the latest technology and most of them want me to share my knowledge with them, but time constraints prevent me from doing so right now. The demand for good sounds is growing by the day and I get 99% of the major concerts launched in Sri Lanka. As a child I learnt the keyboard and piano from Dulip Gabadamudalige. I can sing too, but I am happy to be the technical guy I am. I still continue to study my subject. I have a major exam coming up this month. Good promoters and production companies know the importance of good sounds because the output is most crucial. I have no competitors in this country except my ownself,” laughs Malinda.

“We will be expanding and upgrading Universal Sound taking advantage of my international links in the audio business. I am also a member of the Audio Engineering Society in New York. I work as a Harman technical presenter in Sri Lanka. I am thankful to JBL speaker brand head Paul Bourman and Mark Lim - Harman Asia sales director Singapore.

“I have been to world renowned auditoriums to study measurement skills in various venues. I use high end measurement tools. In my opinion the Musaeus College auditorium and the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium are the two best venues. I did Rukantha’s show ‘Ru Sanda Re’ last Saturday. I am grateful to my mentor Asoka Peiris who is our main investor and director of Universal Sound.

As a partner company we work with MOS Lightings and Stages headed by Hussain Faizal.  I am grateful to my parents, brothers and sisters, Nalin Perera, Marians, Asoka Peiris and all who have helped me achieve this status today,” he said.
