Floating Space Theatre Company launches its creative practice teaching project with the Floating Space Performance Intensive running from August 1-4, 2012 at the Goethe-Institute (39, Gregory's Road, Colombo 7).

The Performance Intensive, under the direction of Ruhanie Perera (Creative Director, Floating Space), is designed to offer opportunities to explore voice and breath, acting technique and movement as approaches to performance, or build on one of these approaches over the four days in a more in-depth subject study. Or, if you’re just curious, pop in for any one session and give us a try! The gamut of ‘student’ starts at 12 years and extends to the adult beginner, so every aspiring performer has the opportunity to be a part of this Intensive.

This project comes under Floating Space Theatre Company’s objectives to advocate the use of theatre outside its more traditional purpose and engage in the creative arts at a broader level of theatre education and training, research and building an applied theatre practice. The Intensive is one of the company’s efforts towards creating contexts and options for creative arts education. The sessions will be conducted by the permanent members of the company who are practitioners working in the creative arts.

The workshops on offer during the Floating Space Performance Intensive comprise Voice and Breath conducted by Tracy Jayasinghe, Actor’s Workshop conducted by Jake Oorloff and Creative Movement conducted by Venuri Perera. The workshops are supported by the Goethe Institute.

For more information on the workshops and to confirm participation please contact Ruhanie Perera on 0771529889. Registration for the workshops will take place on July 28th (Sat) and 29th (Sun) from 10.00am to 1.00pm at the Goethe Institute, 39, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7. Please note that registration is mandatory to secure a place in the workshop (max. participants per workshop is 15).

Workshop Description:

Voice and Breath conducted by Tracy Jayasinghe

The premise of the course is to, ‘discover your voice’. The Actor’s primary tools are breath, the voice and the body. The relationship between breath and voice, together with the body is the foundation on which acting is based and begins. This workshop focuses on exploring and developing breath and voice through a series of exercises.

The objective is to liberate the voice and connect it with the body. Students will develop an awareness of their breath and sound in their body through activities that will develop their vocal resonance, range, stamina and clarity. The work is physically based to develop a vocal muscularity and encompasses a focused breath routine. This course is essential for performance enthusiasts wanting to be introduced to or improve the quality of their voice!

Actor’s Workshop conducted by Jake Oorloff

All an actor needs to tell a story is his body and voice, and an imagination that controls them. In these workshops we will explore the interplay between imagination, body, voice, ensemble, ease, and focus.  Through a series of exercises participants will look at readying the body for performance, presenting yourself in a space, recognizing impulses in emotion and expressing it in the body and voice. We will also look at how to create, moment-to-moment acting, pursuing objectives and playing actions.

Irrespective of whether you want to pursue acting in a sustained way, amateur or professional, the workshop will provide you a chance to explore and develop life skills, The simple act of getting up in front of people and trying out something new teaches you a lot about yourself and how you relate to people, and hopefully enables you to strengthen those areas you feel are weak and re-discover talents that had probably been asleep for a while!

Creative Movement conducted by Venuri Perera

In this workshop participants will explore movement principles such as body alignment, balance, and co-ordination. Participants will be provided with basic tools for improvisation that will give them the opportunity to improve individual creativity through exploring and expanding one’s own personal movement vocabulary. The connection of emotions to breath and movement will also be explored. Finally, participants will work in a group to create and perform a short movement piece. Walk away with a heightened awareness of your body and improved self-confidence.
