The Irish Curse, a drama production by Silent Hands Creative Circle, an off-shoot of theatre production company Silent Hands, takes a look at a minor problem that has gone on to affect many men around the world.
The play by Martin Casella simply put, is a story about how 5 men deal with what they believe to be the social and emotion issues caused from having a small penis.
The play was discovered and spearheaded by creative director and cast member Miranga Ariyarathne, who after taking an interest in the unusual story, brought it to the attention of acclaimed directors Jehan Bastians and Neidra Williams. After careful consideration, Jehan and Neidra have allowed Miranga along with his fellows cast mates to take a lead role with the drama under the title of their new production company ‘Silent Hands Creative Circle.’
Speaking to Neidra about the play and the new company, she explained the concept behind the story and the route they hope to take under the new banner with this production. She said the idea behind Creative Circle is to give audiences more edgy, serious genres with in-depth though provoking storylines.

“The idea with Creative Circle is to bring in and encourage younger creative minds. With Jehan and I, our ideas are already set in a certain way. If you gave the both of us the same script and put us in separate rooms, we’d probably come up with the same concept for directing it. But, if you give the same script to someone like Miranga, he’d do it in a completely different way. That’s what we want to encourage with this group. It gives the younger crowd a chance to showcase their ideas and let everyone has an equal say,” Neidra further explained.
The plot of the Irish Curse follows the lives of 5 American men of Irish origin, who are all in a support group dealing with the insecurity of having a small penis. The play revolves around one evening when a new member ‘the fifth man’ joins the group and unknowingly breaks the golden rules of the group, such as actually talking about his ‘little’ problem.
The design behind the play is to give the audience an insight into a common problem, yet one that is barely spoken of among men; the insecurity that they have and how it affects them.
On the surface it is a comedy as Neidra informs me, there will be many laughs and well-timed wisecracks from the characters. But on a deeper level, the play also delves into a much more emotional look into the lives of these characters, with the potential of being a real eye opener for the audience, as they watch the men struggle with what they perceive as a real problem in their lives.
The cast of the play, Dominic Keller, Dino Corera, Gehan Blok and Niren Neydorff were all hand picked by Miranga. All of them, seasoned actors who have over the years formed a tight-knit bond with each other; which according to Neidra, will help them discover what areas to push to help bring out that human aspect of the play while still keeping intact the comedic tone.
At the end of the day, the Irish Curse is a production that will keep you entertained as all Silent Hands productions do. It will also be exploring a subject that will connect with you on a deeper emotional level and hopefully shed some light on a social issue that many of us were not aware of to begin with.
So make a date to watch the Irish Curse at the British School Auditorium on 21 and 22 July 2012.
Proceeds from the second night will go towards the charity “Carry Each Other International” which aims to help with the resettlement of widows and children from war effected areas.
