Capturing its rich history, vibrant spirit and the tales of extraordinary women (and men) who have shaped the legacy of Bishop’s College, the book takes the reader on an in-depth journey that began even prior to 1875, through to 1857 when it was founded by the visionary husband and wife duo of Bishop Chapman and his wife Frances.
The book is a true labour of love embarked upon by a committed team of past pupils, who have delved into multiple dimensions and varied facets in the school’s evolution through colonial rule, independence, nationalisation, the closed economy, open economy, wars and insurgencies and the pandemic.
From ‘Whispers from the Archives’ to ‘The Sisters That Came To Be’ to ‘The Neighbourhood’ and ‘The Footprint’, these are some of the chapters that explore the history of the school, its architectural features and its existence in the context of the country’s educational milieu. It also prompts stories and memories from a wide-ranging expanse of individuals who have all been a part of this 150-year tale.
Bishop’s College has moulded and nurtured not just Presidents and Prime Ministers but also pioneers, high achievers, legends and some illustrious old boys among its student body. The enduring relationship between her Sister and Brother School S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia is also explored in the book.

“There was a single realisation that gave us the inspiration to write this 150-year-old story. This was not going to be an ordinary history book – how could it be when Bishop’s College is no ordinary school? It is revolutionary yet visionary, it is diverse and yet united, it is modern but yet founded in age-old values and it has survived and triumphed in the most difficult of times. This is a story that has to be told.” - Savithri Rodrigo, Author
"Through the centuries, down the generations, across families and lifelong friendships, this book charts the many stories that have made Bishops’ College such a special community. It has been a privilege to co-chair its conception and execution and to make a fitting tribute to this milestone anniversary of our Alma Mater" – Ramola Sivasundaram & Savithri Wijesekera, Project Co-Chairs
