The Achilles-heel of most modern day electronics is the battery. Under average or heavy use, most smartphones don’t usually last even a day on a single charge. While most people understand the basics of extending the battery life of their electronics, very few actually understand the basics of maintaining a battery.

The following are some tips on extending the battery life of your electronic devices (I have kept this as general as possible so that it will stay relevant to users of different mobile platforms).

Enable Power Saver:  Most Android phones now come with the option that automatically engages the power saver feature once the battery level decreases to a certain point. Enable this feature to avoid the hassle of individually disabling key features.

Screen Brightness: This saps a lot of battery power and the best thing to do would be to either set it to automatic or reduce it as much as possible. However, keep in mind that if you set it to the lowest setting possible, then it will become harder to see the display outdoors. So if you spend most of your day indoors, then you can significantly reduce the screen brightness.

Turn-off Wi-Fi: If you are not using Wi-Fi then make sure it is switched off. Even if you are not connected to a particular network, switching on the feature will drain your battery.

Turn-off Bluetooth: Bluetooth is generally used in short bursts, but many people make the mistake of leaving it on at all times and that really adds a lot of stress on your battery.

Disable Background Data and Automatic Sync: Most of the apps require enabling background data but this saps a lot of power so if you are not chatting or looking forward to some important email, disable it. Automatic Sync allows the phone to sync key data (Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) with your contacts and other features, which in turn drains your battery so try to use it only when the phone is connected to a charger.

Maintaining your Battery

Fully charge/discharge up to four cycles when using a new battery.

Fully discharge and then fully charge the battery every two weeks.

Try to use the device until it runs out of power or gives you a battery low warning. Avoid charging battery when it is near full capacity (very important).

Store the battery carefully and do not expose it to the elements.
