Tech Tip of the Week

This week’s tech tip doesn’t necessarily have a theme. Instead, it features a random mix applications concerned with security and productivity. Overall, these applications might just make your browsing experience at home or at work a little more interesting.
Mobile Hotspots
Ever been in a situation where a bunch of people are hanging out with laptops or notebooks but only one person was smart enough to remember a dongle?
One solution would be to go hunting for a Wi-Fi spot but a more elegant solution is a mobile hotspot (eg, mHotspot, connectify) app which converts a laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Just plug in a dongle and create a hotspot, which others can then log into.
The added beauty of this app is that it allows the majority of the group to remain lazy and/or forgetful and that one person can continue doing all the work.
Hotspot Shield
If you are a student studying a university or an institute, you might find many of your favourite websites blocked by the networke administrator. If you are doing some serious work, you may have concerns of being traced by Big Brother.
Well, regardless of your occupation or your motives, the best option is to get a Hostpot Shield (there is an app with the same name) that masks your IP address and lets you access previous blocked sites, and continue with your work as usual.
I would recommend testing the software once you install it by tracing your IP address; if it shows you to be somewhere other than Sri Lanka, then it works.
Disabling Windows Components
If you are an obsessive techie you probably don’t like seeing a bunch of Windows components that you are probably never going to use (Windows media tools, Internet Explorer, games, etc.).
If you want to get rid of them, go to control panel> Uninstall a program > turn windows features on or off> add or remove components.
