Game Preview: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

When someone puts together elements of your favourite political drama and the most intense FPS shooter in history, it won't be surprising if the results are nothing short of amazing. ActiVision has brought together an ensemble of futuristic awe-inspiring carnage and the hardened realpolitik of Kavin Spacey's House of Card's character. If the trailer is a good enough hint, then the game is just what we expected: amazing. With enough trailers and game footage to get a good idea of what is to come, the first impressions of gamers and critics seem positive.

Plot

Some of us may find the COD plots a little too theatrical for our liking. Yet, it seems that they've been doing such a good job with their plots of terrorists and rogue states trying to take over the world with the use of everything from oil to space-based satellite weapons, that one of their writers was invited to join the Atlantic Council, a think tank that specialises in US foreign policy. Dave Anthony, the writer and director of COD, will begin work with the council to help dream of futuristic threats that could blow our world apart. So, who says you video games are a waste of time?

The latest COD instalment, set in 2054, features a terrorist organisation called the KVA, successfully manages to destroy a bunch of nuclear reactors all over the developed world simultaneously. While it is somewhat disappointing to note that we'll still be using nuclear as opposed to fusion energy, and that even by 2054 the old dividing lines between "developed" and "developing" have not vanished, the plot sets the perfect tone for a military takedown. Interestingly, despite decades of experience fighting terrorists, the military forces of the developed world fail to respond effectively. As a result, private military corporations are drafted into the fight. In this setting, the game focuses on the primary protagonist, Jack Mitchell and his missions for Atlas, the most powerful of the private military corporations. The star, however, is Kevin Spacey's Jonathan Irons, the CEO and founder of Atlas, who sets about launching covert operations to mould the world in his image. One would almost think this is a political drama with a side-dish of FPS action.

Gameplay

Set in the future, Advanced Warfare takes full advantage of the type of futuristic weapons military planners’ dream of at night. This includes holographic display, cloaking devices, hovercraft systems, heads-up display, powerful exo-skeletons and a variety of advanced vehicles, weapons and gadgets. Like the previous instalments, action seems to focus on a variety of battlefields across the globe including San Francisco's golden gate bridge. Other cool features include the wide use of drones, climbing gloves (Spider Man fantasies coming true!) and a whole bunch of sci-fi toys.

Launch Date

The game launches on November 4th worldwide, and if previous games are any precedent, expect this to break the $ 1 billion mark within a couple of weeks. Should you get it? Yes! Because as Jonathan Irons states, "what you seeing here is advanced warfare”, and who doesn't want a piece of that?
