If my memory serves me correctly, Mega Race 2 was the first game I ever played and this was way back in 1998 or 1999. The game itself was released way back in 1996. I also managed to play Mega Race 3 (2003), but for reasons I can’t remember anymore, I don’t think I finished the game so I’ll touch on it but I’m not going to write on it extensively.

Mega Race 2, at the time (in my world view) was the most amazing game ever and the one thing I remember very clearly is the fact that it was very addictive. The game was a basic racing game that allowed players to zoom around futuristic tracks that were actually quite amazing.

Players, also got the chance to attack other cars and knock them out of the race. So missiles, oil slicks, shields and repairs were all to be used to gain an advantage but unfortunately players couldn’t actually look behind, which made it impossible to dodge attacks from the rear.

The graphics were also quite good (for the time) and from I remember, the audio was also pretty good. Mega Race 3, built on this and I think the most obvious improvement was in the audio and visuals and the game did look more solid than the original version.

The major downside of Mega Race 2, was that it did not actually involve any realistic steering mechanisms (like Dirt 2) and the only thing you had to do was accelerate and fire at your enemies. At first it may seem incredibly thrilling but its not a game that you are going to want to replay after you are done.

Once players mastered the tracks, it became increasingly easier to finish the game. However, the AI system was not actually quite passive; on the contrary, it was extremely aggressive and the other AI players would take a shot at you (and each other) as soon as they got the chance to do so.

Overall, as I was going through images of the game, I was shocked to see the poor quality of graphics I once thoroughly enjoyed.

However, in our gamer memories everything seems better in the past and the game still evokes fond memories of staying up late into the night until my mother had to actually chase me out of the room (I was still in school back then). However, I don’t think I would play this again even if I had the chance; somethings are best left in the past.

Question: what is the first game you ever played on a PC?
