The PlayStation 4 is out, finally. In a gadget-mad world, many of us were speculating on the PS4, just as the PS3 was becoming available. Now that the PS4 is here, there is a lot to be thrilled about. It comes loaded with enhanced specs, new features and of course a whole range of PS4 ready games. After months of leaks, speculation and wishful thinking, it is nice to get some definite information of the PS4.

The following is everything you should know about the PS4

Hardware

Unsurprisingly, the PS4 is powered with an AMD processor. The single-chip custom made processor and utilises eight 86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU cores. It also features a next generation AMD Radeon based graphics system. As impressive as this sounds, it must be noted that the processors are less powerful in comparison to Intel’s fastest processors.

The PS4 also has another impressive spec underneath its skin: the highly enhanced PC GPU system, which packs 18 GCN units. A GCN unit is essentially a processing cluster and each one contains 64 cores. All in all, this is said to deliver an amazing 1.84 TFLOPS of processing power and is certainly a more powerful component than the Jaguar CPU. According to Sony, the GPU system will be used to enhance both general computing tasks and graphics elements.

In addition, the PS4 comes loaded with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. This is said to provide high-end gaming performance. In fact, Sony has stated that users will be able to shut down the PS4 mid-game and then switch it on in seconds and continue playing.

The PS4 also features Blu-ray disk support and HDMI output, amongst other things more standard features.

Playstation Eye

The PS4 will feature two highly sensitive cameras that are equipped with wide-angle lenses and 85-degree diagonal angle views. The company states that the cameras are powerful enough to differentiate between users in the background and the foreground. The intelligent cameras can help provide a more interactive gaming experience and even a more power secure login system.

PS4 Controller

Sony unveiled the DualShock 4 controller system for the PS4 and it features better vibration mechanisms, enhanced motion sensors and a touchpad on the front.

Backwards Compatibility

Disappointingly PS4 will not offer native support for PS3 games. This is particularly troublesome for those who have painstakingly built a collection of PS3 games.

Release Date

The PS4 will not be coming to Sri Lanka anytime soon. Indeed it will only be launched in the big markets (US, Japan and Europe) at the end of the year, just in time for the Christmas shopping season. However, the rest of the world will have to wait until early 2014 or even longer.

Should you get one?

Unlike smartphones or PCs that feature relatively more incremental changes, consoles are upgraded less frequently but more significantly. Therefore, it makes little sense to wait and leapfrog to the PS5. If you really want a console system, then it is certainly worth waiting till the release of the PS4. From now onwards game developers are going to focus all their energy on PS4 games anyway. Therefore, it makes little sense now to buy a PS3 and get stuck with a limited or outdated offering of games. Ten months is a long time in the tech world, but with something like the PS4, it is well worth the wait.
