So let's say you are a big fan of Assassin's Creed Unity and you want to get your hands to play it on the PC. Well you might want to reserve your pay check for a serious hardware upgrade. Ubisoft release its minimum requirements to play Assassin's Creed Unity and it is anything but minimum. You'll need to get your hands on a
Required
· 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8/8.1
· Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz, AMD FX-8350 @ 4.0 GHz or AMD Phenom II x4 940 @ 3.0 GHz
· 6 GB RAM
· NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 or AMD Radeon HD 7970 (2 GB VRAM)
· DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card with latest drivers
· 50GB storage space
· Windows-compatible keyboard and mouse required, optional controller
· 256 Kbps or faster broadband connection
Recommended
· Intel Core I7-3770 @ 3.4 GHz or AMD FX-8350 @ 4.0 GHz or better
· 8 GB RAM
· NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 or AMD Radeon R9 290X (3 GB VRAM)
While these may seem a bit abstract. The Verge did feature an article on the prices for these specs. Start with the GTX 680, which retailed for about $500 at launch (2012). The GTX 770 (similar to the 680) goes for about $300 today.
Even the minimum requirements are pricy. The Core i5-2500K alone goes for about $220 and that is not even including the 6GB RAM. Overall, a PC that checks all the boxes in the minimum requirements will retail for about $1000+ (~LKR 130,000 +). In addition, don't forget that you'll need 50GB of space to play Unity, which is about 30 GB, more than what's required for Windows 8.
So why this huge emphasis on performance? Enthusiasts with lots of money to splurge on gaming would argue that Ubisoft merely wants us to play Unity at 1920x1080 @ 60 fps. I, however, seem partial to the cynics, who argue Ubisoft designed Unity for consoles and didn't bother optimising the game for the PC (far more powerful than consoles). This strategy saves time and money but also leaves gaming enthusiasts who prefer the PC from being able enjoy Unity without busting some serious cash on high-end performance requirements.
While there is little doubt that Unity will be able to break previous records, and set a new standard for the franchise, most of us will experience all its glory on a 30fps console. Thanks Ubisoft.
