When travelling -walking, hiking, biking,etc.- most of us have a general idea of how much time it will take us to get to our destination but getting exact details isn't always easy, unless you are willing to time yourself.
However, with a smartphone, such a simple process should not be so cumbersome and fortunately there are a number of apps that are designed to make it easier to record and share our movement.
One excellent example is 'My Tracks' from Google. This app is designed to record your path (on Google Maps), speed, distance, and elevation while moving. Users can view the data live, annotate a particular path, and even hear voice announcements while travelling.
I tried the app on a number of occasions and it is quite accurate. Obviously there are a number of different ways to use the app.
For exercise fanatics, it is a great way to keep track of a workout (running, biking, hiking, etc.) and then review the path, average speed, etc.
Personally, I used it to time my commutes to and from work to get a better idea of exactly how long it generally takes me to get from one place to another. This is partly because I was bored and partly because all my friends tend to lose faith in me when I say "I'll be there in 30 mins, etc." (it's 30 mins from every location). After a particular outing, users can save the information on the SD card and review it at any time.
The app also allows users to share their data via Google+, Facebook or Twitter. There are also a number of different methods of actually visualising the data.
Gadget geeks will be happy to note that the app is compatible with accessories such as the Zephyr HxM Bluetooth heart rate monitor, Polar WearLink Bluetooth heart rate monitor and the ANT+ heart rate and speed distance monitors (needs a compatible phone).
This is a fun app to play around with and has a lot of practical benefits so if you are already using it or plan on trying it out, give us your review.
