The Style Files : SS/15 Men's Fashion: The Trouser
There seems to be a lot happening below the belt as designers reevaluate and redesign trousers, for men.
After several seasons of relative disinterest and neglect, designers are suddenly focusing on the potential of trousers to push the masculine look forward this summer. This is what we’ve learnt from the catwalks.
If you’re the type of man who favours the suit but want a nod to the progressive as well as the traditional then try trousers that contrast with but also complement your jacket. A tall order and tricky to pull off! Be inspired by Ermenegildo Zegna and you’ll be right at the cutting edge. When doing this consider the overall silhouette and if the patter and profile work!
Kanye West has made luxury sweatpants de-riguer for style savvy men. These softly constructed trousers (sweatpants sounds so awful) have been promoted from the gym bag to almost every part of the male wardrobe. Luxury fabrics like cashmere, biker detailing and leather have all been added to the to lift their profile and it's worked! They used to be trousers that you wore after a break up, now you could probably get married in them!
The larger silhouette seems to be having a fashion moment and could it be that skinny is slackening? The simple way to be both forward thinking and comfortable is to loosen up, try something slouchy with a break. Look to Luke Wilson in The Royal Tennenbaums for inspiration.
You could also stay skinny, that look is not dead in the water just yet. If you are a fan on the slim silhouette and are lean enough to make it work then look for style inspiration at Saint Laurent, they pretty much invented the look.
If you’re bold, brave and really on the cutting edge of fashion then try the shorts paired with leggings look. Ridiculous to some, fashion forward to others wearing long shorts over leggings was all the rage at Cerruti. You could lead the fashion pack or be a fashion fail but if you’re feeling adventurous try it!
