If you had been in school back in early 2000, you would find this face familiar. She was a character from a kid’s show called “Hapan Padura”. She was only 11years back then. She had to take a break from the TV industry as her mother, who is a prominent school teacher, wanted her to concentrate more on studies.  And now she is back looking for new opportunities in the industry. Let’s meet Roshi for a chat.

The day you did your last show on TV, were you emotional?

Yes I was. It happened back in 2004 December, I used to present a weekly children’s programme named Swarna Kekulu. I was extra emotional on that day especially because of the tsunami incident; we did live programmes seeking for help for the kids and families in need. It was the last programme I presented.

You went out of the field for your studies, has your mission been accomplished?

Yes, almost accomplished I would say. I’m currently studying the London LLB and I have successfully completed my Diploma in Law.

Do you believe you should have never left the industry and continued your career parallel with your studies?

Yes I do, but at the same time I’m happy about each and every decision that I have made in the past. There’s a lot more in my list along with a whole heap of other stuff I hope to do before I die. It’s important to say that I never left the industry. Even though I put a coma to TV programmes and tele dramas I have been doing stage dramas. My maiden appearance as 'Juliet' in Shakespeare’s 'Romeo and Juliet' was a turning point in my drama career.

I was fortunate enough to win the All Island Best Actress for the year 2006 playing the role of Juliet. To add a bit of icing to the cake, I got the chance of being the All Island Best Actress in the All Island Drama Competition, which was organised by Caritas Sri Lanka.

I participated in the International European Women’s Theatre Festival held in Sweden and Finland. It was a great experience. I should mention that it was my mom’s wish and now I’ve reached half of my goals and a lot more is yet to be achieved. Everything happens for a reason I believe.

What areas are you looking at? Film? Drama?

Acting is my passion. I cherish every moment I spend on stage. I’ve done a couple of tele dramas. But I would love to get involved in the film industry since it’s a different experience.

Your mom was with us throughout this interview, is her support your biggest strength?

Of course, she is my role model. And she is the pillar of my success. She nurtured my talents and encouraged me to improve my talents. Without her I’m nothing. I love her in a very special way. I always look for her opinion before I make a decision in my life since she knows what’s best for me. No matter how old I am, I’d continue to seek her advice in every step I take.

Are you the same person you were in 2002 or do you believe your life and your thoughts have changed over the past decade?

I’m not the same person at all. I’ve learnt a lot in the past few years but I’m still the same old talkative girl. I’ve grown to be a bit mischievous though. It’s just that I’m a bit mature now.
I have always wanted to be a lawyer and that is what I’ve always been dreaming of since I was a kid, so yes my main career would be law but at the same time I don’t think it would be a problem for me to continue with singing and acting.

Have your talents been sharpened by any kind of guidance, direction over the past decade?

Yes, after I started schooling at Ave Maria Convent my talents further improved under the careful guidance of my teachers. In the mean time I participated in many competitions and won the all island awards for English TV and Radio news reading, drama, singing and dancing too. My school life was of great strength for me to improve my talents.

10 years ago you put a coma to your career. Will you do the same when you are in a serious relationship one day?

If I find the right person at the right time, it wouldn’t be an issue I suppose. Simply because I know my limits and I need a partner who would understand my nature. Also he needs to understand my talents and improve them. So if that happens then I will not have to put a coma again. I hope and pray that I find a person like that someday. Anyway I don’t think I have to worry about that, my mom would find me a good person when the time comes.
