Sachith Fernando or ‘Sach’ as most people know him was this year’s non-celebrity pick in Cleo magazine’s Top 50 Bachelors of Australia. While he didn’t win the contest, the 24 year old earned the highest votes that a non-celebrity entrant has ever received in the history of the competition. This is the highest that a Sri Lankan has ever achieved in this prestigious competition, an honour that has garnered Sach much attention, especially amongst the ladies.
Q: How did you get into the Cleo Top 50 Bachelors contest?
Every year the magazine holds a separate ‘wildcard’ competition to enable a non-celebrity to win a spot in the Top 50. Anyone can enter this event and like the Top 50 competition, the readers of the magazine vote for their favourite wildcard entrant. The winner is the candidate with the most votes which this year happened to be me.
Q: You're currently following a career in law. When and why did you decide to become a lawyer?
I made this decision very early in my life having witnessed my mother practise as a lawyer and subsequently a magistrate in Sri Lanka. I wanted to be in a position to affect change and contribute to law reform. At the same time, I find it rewarding to help people who haven’t had the benefit of an education as I understand their legal rights and obligations.
Q: What's the best thing about being single?
The ability to discover myself and the type of girl I would be compatible with.
Q: Do men really pay attention to details when it comes to women?
We certainly do, although women seem to be their own harshest critics. I notice the things that attract me to a woman like her eyes and personality, but I don’t notice things that don’t matter, like her dress size.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to workout, read and perform. I am often involved in various plays or dances.
Q: What’s your secret to keeping in shape?
Lots of exercise and a healthy diet. I go to the gym at least 3 times a week and try to eat healthily. I eat a lot of protein including red meat and chicken. Being Sri Lankan, I used to eat a lot of rice but have recently cut this to a minimum and eat brown rice as a substitute to white.
Q: What do you think women find attractive about you?
I have no idea. I hope it’s my personality more than anything else. I’m fun and easy going yet driven and ambitious and I never take myself too seriously.
Q: What's the one thing about women that annoys you?
Their reluctance to be happy with their appearance.
Q: In your opinion, who's the most influential female personality today?
I believe there are several influential female personalities in this modern society so it’s difficult to choose one. Michelle Obama and the three women who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakul Karman definitely stand out as incredibly strong, influential women. They contribute significantly to their respective communities and are focused on strengthening women’s positions in society.
Q: What’s your worst dating experience?
When I was being interrogated about previous relationships on a first date.
Q: Have you ever been to Sri Lanka?
Yes, I visit Sri Lanka at least once every second year. During my last visit in 2011, I was pleased to see that Sri Lanka has advanced significantly both in the social and infrastructure sectors. I take pride in being a Sri Lankan-Australian and despite where I am in the world, will always keep strong ties with my motherland.
Q: Who’s your dream date?
My dream date would be a genuine girl who is down to earth, affectionate and one who I can have a good laugh with.
