How stressful was it to leave to leave your fulltime job to make Clubhouse Vivaldi your career?

While I realized  it was a risk that I was taking by leaving a stable, full-time job to pursue my passion, I followed my intuition which constantly told me that I have to give my full attention to Clubhouse Vivaldi if I ever want it to get to the place where I want it to be. And as Vivaldi expanded it also came to a point where I couldn’t really manage both my job and Vivaldi together – and I knew it was time to pick. Although it was a huge risk, I took it anyway and I’m glad I did! Within just 2 months of dedicating myself fulltime to this we have been able to achieve so much including expanded product lines and exploring new markets.

Who has been your biggest support in your life?

My family. Although I’m considered the mischievous one, my family has been there for me throughout for me in all the good times and also the bad - whatever fix I get myself into I always know that they’re there for me.

Explain the brand name Clubhouse Vivaldi?

Clubhouse – the place where everyone gathers to have fun. Vivaldi – the composer of one of the most celebrated collections of violin concertis in the world – “Four Seasons”. Clubhouse Vivaldi has an undie for every moment, every mood and every season!

Tell me your style of work?

Organized chaos

What are some of your most defining moments in life?

Getting Clubhouse Vivaldi’s first retail order
Saying yes to the world's fastest roller coaster ride at Six Flags
And the day I quit my full-time job

What made you work with Undergarments?

When I was an undergrad student, I was back home on vacation and was really taken aback when I couldn’t find a decent pair of well-fitting and well-designed undies and it also hit me that I cannot be the only one facing this problem. So I decided to take things into my own hands and voila!

What has been your favourite travel destination and why?

I’m an easy going guy, so just about anywhere I can strip my pants and show off my vivaldis without causing a public violation

What is your favorite part about being a Fashion Designer?

The love from everyone who wears what we make. I feel more than ecstatic when someone tells us how great they feel in their Vivaldis. One of our favourites being “It’s like angel wings caressing my b**ty”

How do you handle stress and pressure?

By not really letting myself feel those things. I try to focus on a few things at a time.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that one wouldn’t learn from your resume alone?

I’m always looking for new challenges. Last year, I competed in my first Ironman (relay) and I’ve been hooked ever since. In my free time, you can usually find me training. I’m hoping to finish the entire race one day. I also value the peace and focus that I’ve gained through my efforts to continuously improve.

How do you work on your designs?

Learn. Inspire. Create. If you find me wearing a pair of headphones tucked away in the corner of our office glued on to the computer I’m probably designing.

Where do you want to see your brand showcasing?

Anywhere and everywhere. I want Vivaldi’s to be the most accessible pair of underwear for anyone because a pair of kick ass, softer than cotton undies deserved to be worn by everyone. Because getting through the day starts with comfy underwear (because can you really conquer the day with itchy underwear?).

Tell me about your family?

Like all the best families, we have our share of eccentricities, parents who are proud and angry at the same time and wayward youngsters (namely me) who are the usual causes of family disagreements. And on the rare off chance it wasn’t my fault, I still got the blame while my sister laughs and gets the other half of the chocolates I hid in the pantry. But it’s not a complete family if you didn’t feed your sister chilies saying it was green beans, right? I wouldn’t have my family any other way and I’m 98% confident they’d say the same.

What’s the best / worst part of doing your own business?

The best part is that it allows me the freedom to really use my resources and put into motion the things I believe will be the good for the business. The worst part is the very rare times that the fact that I am responsible for the livelihood of myself and the other members of Clubhouse Vivaldi dawns on me – but I wont say that that feeling is all bad – it encourages me to do my best.

If you could have been told one thing that you weren't told when you were a teenager, what would you like to have heard?

An astrologer to me:
Quit your dreams of wanting to be an aeronautical engineer. Looks like you will be designing underwear!

On the Spot?
What are your thoughts on the political jargon in SL?

No comments other than that the Sri Lankan political arena is one of the most entertaining comedy shows that one can come across

What are your thoughts on the local fashion / RETAIL industry?

It’s a good stepping stone and learning curve for anyone to start their journey. As an apparel producing country we have access to a lot of resources that many other countries don’t have.

Is it quality or quantity for you? Explain?

Definitely quality. If you look at Clubhouse Vivaldi you will notice that we aren’t making massive quantities of ordinary underwear. We always give priority to comfort and great fit. Every piece of fabric is chosen so as to make sure that every product line is comfortable and feel great on the skin. Every cut is tried and tested many times over until we achieve perfection. We put in a lot of time to achieve the perfect blend of fit, feel and finish.

What do you say is the biggest issue that the youth faces today in Sri Lanka?

Discipline. I could write a book on this.

Fun
Who was your favorite teacher and why?

My science teacher in school. We used to call him Bayya. I’d never miss his classes.

What makes you feel the most secure?

Coming home to a good rice and curry

Who do you admire the most?

Anyone who stands his ground

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?

A solution to the traffic

What’s your favorite ’90s jam?

The Ketchup Song
