Any trip to the southern coast line is memorable and you always come back with good vibes. Over the weekend I found myself with a couple of close friends while some of them decided to take “a short walk” down to Jungle Beach the famous beach in Unawatuna. Little did they know that the old jungle beach trail is the worst to take in the dead of the night which led to a frantic search by those who had gone off to get supplies!
The events of the next day are the whole point of this article and having found a shorter cut to get to Jungle Beach we decided to head down for a swim, there after which we developed quite a big appetite and decided on the best pizza joint in town. If you're staying in Unawatuna - get out of there and go on day trips to this gorgeous place. The food is so fresh, and balance the flavours on your palate to perfection. Of course, the scenery does add much appreciation to any meal here. At Wijeya Beach every morsel of food is made fresh but the highlight is their wood fired pizzas which are to die for.
The staff is extremely friendly and would go to great lengths to cater to your needs. Having developed the big appetite, 7 out of the 10 people decided to go for a pizza each. Now before you start going that would have cost quite a lot but these guys are pretty affordable at 1090/= a pizza which is made right in front of your eyes I would say that is quite a good deal.
I decided to go for the bacon and pineapple pizza, and the taste was phenomenal. The pizza was topped with homemade chillie oil, oregano and chillie, and every bite just sends you on a gastronomical trip that is unfathomable. What was most surprising was that I happened to be with quite a noisy bunch but in this instance the only sounds coming from this table were the occasional “oh my lord, this is soooo good.”
Moving on to the desserts the lemon cake and the brownies are to die for (that is if you have the space to fill them in). Speaking about the location, the entrance is quite small and you can easily miss it. However the restaurant opens out to the beach and it has an amazing view of the beach. Downstairs is generally crowded but you are bound to make a couple of new friends with the tourists. With food this good you must be prepared for a bit of a crowd. The beach is fabulous - no hassle, no kiosks, no sun beds, just soft sand and a natural pool inside the reef. Bring your snorkel - plenty of fish to be seen. Beware of sea urchins, though.
