The Great Escape – Lausanne
As seen through the eyes of Gimhanee Herath; a Sri Lankan wanderer in Switzerland
Situated along the shores of Lake Geneva facing the French town of Évian-les-Bains, with a breathtaking view of the Jura Mountains from most part of this hilly city is Lausanne, one of the main French speaking cities in Switzerland. Famously known as the home of the international Olympic committee Lausanne is known for its athletic community, fine chocolates, cheeses and wines - yes, Switzerland stays true to its clichés! What most don’t realize due to the hype around the more ’popular ‘aspects of the city are the true local bistros/bars frequented by the community of Lausanne.
The Great Escape is a bistro / bar situated next to the Public Library of Lausanne right above the Riponne-Maurice Béjart metro stop. Easily accessible, great music, extremely friendly staff, a cozy environment and most importantly the easygoing local vibe that keeps the young and old of Lausanne warm during most of its chilly winter days and nights is mainly what makes The Great Escape so special to the people of Lausanne. A burger and fries with a beer or traditional ‘vin chaud’ (hot wine) are what you’d find most people enjoying with blankets and wooden benches indoors or on the outside terrace with its dim fairy lights (yes, you’ll find people enjoying the terrace even when it's snowing, this describes how inviting the ambience at The Great Escape can be!)
Due to Lausanne being home to a very large student population the cost of an average casual evening out with friends are fairly better off compared to average prices of an evening out in Switzerland. If you’re looking for a place to go in your most cozy clothes for a relaxing evening with good music, good friends, surrounded by the true local vibe of Lausanne (easy to get to and easy on the pocket of course), The Great Escape is not to be missed out on!
