If you haven’t figured out a fitting respite from the scorching heat outside, we totally understand, since we were likewise baffled – until a couple of days back, that is. We think we’ve figured the perfect daytime beverage you could have to escape the weather, and feel refreshed inside out. An invigorating combination of lime and mint together in a light soda or juice or crush can indeed turn your day around.

We visited three places in a bid to recommend the better lime-mint beverage, and it would be safe to say that you could drop into any one of the three looking to be equally satiated – they were all very nice. The one we had at Hazari’s was a very light soda, the one at Whight & Co. was a lime soda and the pick at Coco Veranda was a crush, so you could suit yourself. Keep reading for the ratings.

Mint Lime Soda - Hazari’s (166, Thimbirigasyaya Road, Colombo 05)

Price - Rs.170
Value for money - average
Taste - ***
Variety - Hazari’s also serves a green tea with mint and a mint iced tea, both of which are priced at Rs.170.
Overall - Very refreshing but it was veering towards the lime instead of having balanced flavours of the lime and mint but nonetheless a good, chilled and refreshing drink perfect for the balmy Colombo weather.

Lime Soda - Whight & Co. Café (located on Marine Drive and at the end, on your right of Aloe Avenue in Colpetty)

Price - Rs.220
Value for money - high
Taste - *****
Variety - None
Overall - Think we just discovered Colombo’s most perfect (for the moment anyway) lime soda. The beverage was perfectly chilled, and the flavour was just right, veering towards a bitter aftertaste owing to the lime rind blended in. The drink is accompanied by sugar syrup which you can liberally pour in and stir if you find the drink too tart for your liking.

Lime and Mint Crush - Coco Veranda (32, Ward Place, Colombo 07)

Price - Rs.450
Value for money - high
Taste - ****
Variety - Also serving a Kiwi and Mint Crush priced at Rs.450.
Overall - There were differing opinions on this drink from both of us because I quite liked the fresh and refreshing aspects of the drink in addition to the drink having lots of crushed ice infused with the lime and mint so it’s like a slushie which eventually melts away and turns into a cold drink. Nivedha didn’t like that it was rather strong in flavour and again too tart for her liking.
