V Try U Buy - Cream Buns & Custard Pastries

While this week’s round may not consist only of cream buns (discovered that not all pastry shops make them), it was imperative that custard pastries were included seeing as how a custard filled bun was included in Part 1 of the round. Making a first stop at the Perera & Sons outlet down Havelock Road, the procured cream bun was quite nice and fairly priced for its size. BreadTalk serves a mean oblong-shaped custard pastry which is a lovely treat while the cream bun found at Sen-Saal was a winner on its own. Do check the ratings for more!

Cream Bun - Perera and Sons (31, Havelock Road, Colombo 05)

Overall - The cream bun is good and very well priced for its size which isn’t too small or big but just right. The cream filling is quite sweet though but since the pastry isn’t too large, you don’t end up feeling sick.

Smart Aleck (custard pastry) - BreadTalk (85, Thimbirigasyaya Road, Colombo 05)

Overall - This pastry is soft and filled with semi sweet custard, and it’s probably one of the best items from the sweet range at BreadTalk. The light pastry combined with the soft, smooth custard is very good and the flavour is simple.

Cream Bun - Sen-Saal (240, Havelock Road, Colombo 05)

Price - Rs.38
Value for money - high
Variety - A chocolate bun with plain cream filling is priced at Rs.30 while the chocolate bun with chocolate cream filling is priced at Rs.40.
Taste - *****
Overall -This isn’t the same type of cream bun in a choux pastry we’ve featured. It’s two tea buns sandwiched with a plain cream filling and makes for a great midday or teatime snack. It’s soft, fresh and quite tasty but be warned, the cream filling is extremely sweet so if you don’t prefer that, you can always scrape off the excess filling.
