There’s no doubt that everyone enjoys a hefty slice of chocolate cake any time of day, so we thought it most appropriate to embark on a hunt for the best chocolate cake in town. Having tried the chocolate cakes at Delifrance, The English Cake Company and Klassy, I picked the TECC one owing to its soft, fudgy character and best value for money. Chocolate Cake - Delifrance (Odel, Alexandra Place, Colombo 07)
Price - Rs.300 + service charge
Value for money - average
Taste - ****
Overall - Two layers of fluffy, light chocolate cake sandwiched with a light, delectable chocolate cream icing and this hefty slice proved to be rather delicious and not too sweet - just the way I like my chocolate desserts! It’s definitely not a death-by-chocolate inducing cake and it’s perfect to go with coffee.
Chocolate Cake - The English Cake Company (Suleiman Terrace, off Jawatte Road, Colombo 05)
Price - Rs.160
Value for money - high
Taste - *****
Overall - Fudgy, rich chocolate cake and excellent value for money. It’s rather sweet and extremely chocolatey and very, very good cake. Tastes as though it was baked in your own kitchen but that’s the thing with all goodies from TECC, it’s fresh and wholesome minus unnecessary additives and preservatives.
Chocolate Fudge Cake - Klassy (2B, De Fonseka Road, Colombo 04)
Price - Rs.75
Value for money - low
Taste - **
Overall - This slice of cake tasted rather artificial and really not at all like the chocolate cake from Klassy I remember from my childhood. A bit of a disappointment when you’re expecting something comfortingly delicious. It didn’t taste as fresh either and it most certainly wasn’t fudge.
PICK: Chocolate Cake - The English Cake Company
