Coming across apple pie in Colombo can be a bit tough especially since I came to learn that not a lot of pastry shops/cafés serve the deliciously comforting dessert. Apple pie is one of those perfect treats you’d love to tuck into for afternoon tea or as dessert after dinner. I won’t argue that the best ones are the pies made at home by your mum or close family member but myself (along with another friend) found that tucking into these hefty slices on a balmy Tuesday afternoon proved to be delicious, and an instant mood uplifter. Apple Pie - Coco Veranda (32, Ward Place, Colombo 07)
Price - Rs.390
Value for money - average
Taste - ***
Overall - A soft pastry crust covered the entire slice which was filled with generous chunks of stewed apple in a light sauce with slight hints of cinnamon. Rather tasty and very good but the pastry crust and base wasn’t as crumbly as we’d expected it to be and we found it to be too soft. Nonetheless a decent slice of apple pie.
Apple Pie - Mitsi’s Coffee Shop (34A, Bagatalle Road, Colombo 03)
Price - Rs.400
Value for money - high
Taste - *****
Overall - This slice was clearly the pick for this week’s round of apple pie. Mitsi does a perfect job with all her pastries, desserts and other dishes so I wasn’t surprised to find that this pie consisted of a perfect pastry crust and base - not too firm and filled with a delicious filling of apple chunks slathered in an apple and cinnamon sauce along with a few chopped nuts.
Apple Pie - Sugar Bistro & Wine Bar (Crescat Boulevard)
Price - Rs.450+ service charge and taxes
Value for money - average
Taste - *****
Overall - Another of Colombo’s best served slices of apple pie. The crust was thin and baked with brown sugar crystals which was rather different and nice for a change without the usual plain crust. It’s served warm and with a small dish of cream which you can pour generously over the pie before digging into it. The filling is divine and while I don’t recommend sharing a slice after a meal, it is big in size but still so tasty that you might not want to share at all.
