Starting December 4th, the Thursday Good Market at Diyatha Uyana will be open from 3 to 11 pm.
The Night Market is being launched as part of the Good Market second anniversary celebrations, and a special entertainment lineup is planned from 6 pm to 11 pm including Tso Roshan, Thakshila and Manoj, Nabith, Drum House, Dillon, The Bakery, Chali and Purna, and DJ Missy Flame. Free film screenings and night-time entertainment acts are planned for future weeks.
The Thursday Good Market includes more than 60 vendors with certified organic produce, natural food and snacks, eco-friendly home and garden products, handmade crafts, and more. It has a larger range of products than the Saturday Good Market at the Colombo Racecourse. The hours were changed based on requests from working families that had difficulties traveling to Battaramulla on a weekday. According to Good Market organizer Achala Samaradivakara, “Good Market supporters can avoid the rush hour traffic and come out when it’s nice and cool.”
The Good Market is a curated event, which means all vendors go through an application and review process to ensure they meet Good Market standards and their products are “good for the planet, good for the country, and good for you.” The market began in December 2012 with 32 approved vendors. There are now more than 160 approved vendors and a Facebook following of more than 75,000.
The Good Market was started by volunteers. It is now registered as a not-for-profit Guarantee Limited company and operates as a mission-driven social enterprise. Good Market events were set up to be sustainable, but not profit-making. Stall fees are kept as low as possible to reduce the entry barrier for rural producers, small enterprises, and new businesses that are socially and environmentally responsible.
The Saturday Good Market at the Colombo Racecourse will continue to be open from 10 am to 6 pm. The Good Market organic and natural food shop is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm inside the Lakpahana grounds at 14 Philip Gunawardena Mawatha (Reid Avenue), Colombo 07.
