Arrr, matey! (I can’t talk like a pirate, I shall stop). If Nickelodeon was a word and a major part of your childhood then I assume SpongeBob was too. As the Nicktoon with the most episodes and a successful movie, a sequel was bound to happen, but does it hold well compared to the original? Let’s find out!

SpongeBob – Sponge Out of Water (SSOoW for short) starts out with the same trope we all know in Bikini Bottom, Plankton plans to steal the secret formula of the Krabby Patty. While this may grow tiresome after some time, it does bring back a sense of comfort from the old days of yore.

The writing is quite smart, keeping both children and adults entertained with a right balance of jokes and word play. The direction by Paul Tibbitt and Mike Mitchell seems fine but everything in the movie seems held back in comparison to the original.

The cast retaining most of the original with the addition of Antonio Banderas. Again this feels pretty tame in comparison to the original which included Scarlett Johansson, David Hasselhoff and Alec Baldwin.

The animation both 2D and 3D is stellar (out of water 3D sequences are just towards the end of the film which makes the title questionable as the majority of the movie takes place in 2D animation in the ocean).

All in all SSOoW is an excellent family movie that entertains adults and kids alike.
