The Sands: The Quintessential Sunday Beach Holiday

On our way back from Bentota over the long weekend, we were invited to the beautifully secluded ‘The Sands’ Kalutara.

Located just 37kms from Colombo, The Sands was formerly known as Ramada Reef Hotel. The recent renovations have enhanced the contemporary look and feel of the hotel, equipped with an array of exemplary facilities. If you’re looking to spend a day out not too far from Colombo with a phenomenal sea view, this is the place to be.

If you are a fan of beach fun and long hours in the pool complemented by an extensive buffet, it is the quintessential beachfront holiday hotel for you.

The magnificent lagoon style pool is definitely perfect for a good old game of water polo, wrapped by a beautiful lawn and you could bask in the beach fun beyond that.

Our room on the fifth floor had a simple setup and a balcony overlooking the fabulous ocean. You could lounge here watching the sunset with a cup of hot Ceylon Tea. The furnishing is tasteful with rich wood, cool stone floors and crisp, clean white décor with hints of bright colours.

To ensure we had a hassle free holiday the hotel had equipped our room with satellite TV, a telephone, hairdryer, radio, room safe and bath, with an optional minibar. As an ardent fan of the Country & Western genre of music, I loved the selection of piped music the hotel had picked for that weekend.

If you happen to explore the hotel after your afternoon tea, or with a wind down walk after lunch, you will discover a steam bath, sauna and traditional Balinese Ayurveda Spa.

According to the hotel staff, the hotel offers 109 rooms spread across the hotel, all overlooking the sea, with 24-hour room service, laundry service, dry cleaning and free WIFI.  The rooms are also accessible by wheelchair.

The Sands has four restaurants and two bars to fulfil your food and beverage requirement. They are a part of a unique ‘dine around’ concept, introduced to Sri Lanka for the first time, enabling you to relish The Sands’ indulgences at the restaurant or bar of your preference.

If you are up for a Sunday Buffet you could take your family to the WAVES for a delectable spread of Sri Lankan, Indian, Italian and action stations.
