When you think Kosgoda, you think turtle hatcheries, little pockets of beautiful beaches and the Kosgoda Lagoon. The little town is fast becoming one of the more vibrant tourist destinations in the Galle District.
Hidden away on the banks of the lagoon is The Mangroves AKA KOS, a secluded cottage of clay and natural stone that sits atop manicured lawn, enjoying the open breeze from across the lagoon and sea. If you’re apprehensive of coming to a place that isn’t right on the beach, your fears will definitely be dispelled when you come into view of the breathtaking scenery beyond the lodging – still dark waters of the lagoon and mangroves farther away.
The bungalow houses three double bed-rooms and two bathrooms. You’re welcomed first by a long lounge running the length of the lodging’s front portion, which is also framed by a pond-like structure. Inside, there’s a spacious TV-room/hall, flanked by a long dining table beyond and a small kitchenette close by. There’s also a small library stocked with some interesting reads for your leisure.
The rooms themselves are well-kept and comfortable, the entire interior rendering a village-like feel to it. The bathrooms exhibit an open-bath concept, which definitely adds to the whole experience.
Your stay here can be both relaxing and activity-filled. You can opt for lazy naps on hammocks enjoying the breeze and take early morning/late evening trips kayaking down the lagoon, an activity that is sure to build up an appetite.
Food at The Mangroves is prepared by an efficient and friendly cook and provisions need to be brought in by guests. You can give the cook details of your preferred dishes and he’d happily oblige, although his Sri Lankan style dishes are the best to try out.
If you’re in the mood for sea, you can find a decent stretch right across the road from the railway crossing, although you may want to be wary of strong currents sometimes.
Kayaking along the lagoon, on the other hand, is definitely the highlight of the stay here and is a very calming experience. The best times are early mornings and late evenings, when you can avoid the sun. Paddling right to the middle of the lagoon and sitting in a kayak that’s gently lulled by the waters beyond is something you should definitely try.
For a holiday of rejuvenating rest, good food and great scenery, The Mangroves in Kosgoda is an option you should check out.
