The movie starts in Mexico City on the Day of the Dead as Bond moves through a staggering crowd of corpses and skeletons following a man with a mission to destroy. Never the kind for a mellow beginning, shots and bombs and total destruction and catastrophe takes place just seconds into the movie, several minutes before the opening credits. There’s a helicopter, a bad guy, a bomb, around millions of people in one central place and of course, James Bond in all his glory dangling off a helicopter holding onto a flimsy strap a few feet off the air.
All that excitement even before the opening credits definitely got the entire audience pumping – ready for blood, guts and overly compensated fight scenes and the movie really didn’t disappoint.
Chasing a lead given to him by the deceased ‘M’, we follow Bond to Rome as he stumbles into a secret meeting causing him to uncover a criminal organization by the name of ‘Spectre’. The meeting sets the theme for the rest of the movie as he encounters a fellow ghost from his past leading him to track down another character from a previous movie which finally brings him to the famed Bond Girl of this movie – one Dr. Madeleine Swann.
Among train fights, one highly unnecessary cocktail dinner and some very [un]original lines (Madeleine : ‘Why should I trust you?’ Bond : ‘Because I’m your best chance at staying alive’), the movie wasn’t any different from the others in terms of plot, dialogue or action but I suppose that was never the focus of a Bond film anyway.
Despite it lacking in originality – the movie still remained interesting and true to its name. It finally shed a little light into Bond’s intricate and somewhat vague background and the mix of previous characters connecting into one elaborate scheme was definitely something to see. Plus there is somewhat of a surprising element towards the end.
Overall, the movie didn’t disappoint. It was everything that a Bond movie should be and Daniel Craig still manages to do an excellent take on James Bond. A definite must see if you’ve been following the series since the beginning of time and even if you haven’t – this isn’t a bad place to start!
