Ladies College is known for their excellence in the school drama circuit, but what they pulled off over the last weekend certainly raised the bar for school productions. The girls took on “Sister Act 2” under the direction of Mohamed and Nadira Adamaly and they certainly brought the roof down.
The evening started off with some of the girls rapping about what happened in Sister Act 1 and they certainly “dropped it like it was hot”
Mary Patrick, Mary Lazarus and Mary Robert attend the final performance of Deloris Van Cartier at a Las Vegas theater, depicting her antics at the nuns' convent in the previous film. Afterwards, the Sisters ask Deloris played by Chantal Hatch for her assistance once again.
The role of reverend mother superior played by Achera Ratnavale was executed to perfection with her matured voice and brilliant acting.
Special note must be made of Keshana Ratnasingham, Julianne Jayasekara and Zahabiya Adamaly who played the roles of Sisters Mary Lazarus, Mary Patrick and Mary Robert who added quite a lot of humor into the play.
There seemed to be one glitch in the play where the changing of scenes was done by dancers in white to music such as the likes of Justin Timeberlake, One Republic and Macklemore. This happened quite more than it should have happened which led to the show seeming to be a bit dragged and just a tad bit annoying.
The school could have opted for a better choice of venue as the Ladies College hall was extremely humid and having the fans knocked off during the entire performance certainly didn’t help.
But other than that, performances by the likes of Shevonne Mendis who played the role of the troubled Rita Watson were executed brilliantly, Leanne Amunugama, Dhara Gunawardena, Vashni Benjamin, Nicole Perera who played the rolls of the Reverend fathers were amazing.
The star of the show to this writer happened to be Chiranthi Senanayake who played the role of the evil Mr. Crisp. It was evident that she had taken more effort getting into character and executing her role that was certainly worthy of a standing ovation.
Another point to note was the inclusion of three separate choirs in quick succession to depict the choir competition. The level of energy in even the youngest of performers was amazing to watch and had me quite thrilled. Special note must be made of Shenuka Corea who did the Solo for “Oh Happy Day” it was clear that each and every one of them was having the time of their lives onstage.
I certainly can’t wait to see what the girls have got up their sleeves for their next production, because it certainly will be mind-blowing.
