Fusion is the latest trend in dining both locally and internationally, with top star class international restaurants incorporating often exotic blends of flavor in their otherwise blandly sophisticated cuisine. Interior themes have largely borrowed from oriental shades showcasing a diversity that is both new and refreshing. Kamikaze cocktail and sushi lounge is an ideal expression of this contemporary trend and one of very few that operate within the given niche locally.
Located in the heart of Colombo at the CR & FC Complex on Malalasekera Mawatha Colombo 7, Kamikaze is a sleek mix of oriental tapestry complete with a comprehensive range of beverages and Japanese cuisine. The name Kamikaze translates to English as “divine wind” and in its time of operation the lounge bar has proven to be a versatile and adept concept catering to a wide range of soon to be satisfied patrons.
The double glass doors leading to the lounge creates a smooth transition to the dimly lit interior, an experience of transient escapism considering the ambiance finely in sync with its theme. The cherry blossom wallpapers are a soothing shade in contrast to the hustle of the outside world.
The seating arrangements are inviting and offer a subtle yet deviant choice between the cozy covered cubicles, each bearing a Japanese kanji of positive energy and the raised high chairs.
The interior is a solid concoction of crimson shades highlighted by touches of brazen gold. Crimson lamp shades, golden plush of the furniture and the wooden finish on all but the granite countertop surfaces are a few of the attractions all of which contribute to the culture shock that is Kamikaze.
The menu boasts of Japanese cuisine in keeping with the traditional flavor and essence of the oriental delicacies. The element of scrumptious goodness is a given in all dishes served considering that Kamikaze is a fusion bar and not a fine dining restaurant. The highlights in keeping with personal opinion are the sashimi and the teriyaki range. A few additions to the everyday Japanese menu are seen in the form of Teriyaki Sausages and Tempura Fried French Fries; both of which are unique and endemic entrees.
The venue however prides itself in their vast beverages menu, while the bar itself is a treat to the eyes, lit in a shade of blue contrasting the rest of the premise, decorated by a circular mirror which broadcasts an almost elusive vibe.
The venue in addition to its charms, also plays host to a variety of promotional events which never seem to run out. Ranging from a weekly quiz to a monthly after burn topped by a daily krash n’ burn the venue seems to offer value in addition to its already impressive services. The weekends especially transforms Kamikaze into an upbeat chic bar complete with a loud bustling gathering of clientele in contrast to its otherwise soothing ambiance.
On a conclusive note, Kamikaze is one of the very few nightlife venues in the local domain which offer guaranteed enjoyment for all those who enter the premises, providing a satiating experience of wining, dining and dancing in whichever combination desired.
