If you’ve ever had lingering suspicions about the moral leanings of tomatoes, then this movie is for you. As for the rest of us, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (or as I call it: Parachute: A Love Story…we’ll get into that later) is a B-movie spoof, largely focused on the attempts by sentient tomatoes to overthrow the shackles of their Homo sapien oppressors through violent revolt.

Naturally this film was made with a low budget, most of which probably went towards possibly one of the greatest film mishaps to make it on to film, an actual unplanned helicopter crash. As a result, you can look forward to some fairly awful film quality and sadly you don’t really get to see a fully realized tomatoes attack for those of you who are curious about how the Tomatoes actually go about their revolution.

What you do get is one Jaws moment, two stellar surprise musical numbers (not including the opening theme) and the world’s smallest war room, and the most completely random portrayal of a team of special agents, to name a few.

Noteworthy amongst the performances is former Senator, Stephen Peace, playing paratrooper Wilbur Finletter. There is just something really inspiring about the dedication with which this man played this role, particularly the extended on-foot chase sequence during which Peace showcases just how fast a man can move whilst trailing a deployed parachute behind him. Never has there been such an honest depiction of the relationship between a man and his parachute.

All you Pearl Jam, and Sound Gardenfans may want to look this movie up as well if you want to hear drummer, Matt Cameron sing what is arguably the worst song ever made, ‘Puberty Love’

Also, for fans of NBC’s Community, keep an eye out for Black Hitler but don’t tell anyone about it, he’s there for a reason…

Tomatoes is a terribly made, awfully written movie but it’s probably worth watching since it was made that way on purpose. If you don't laugh at the movie, you can at least laugh at the fact that you watched it, although I’m pretty sure most people would get at least a couple of chuckles out of it.

Meanwhile, for the more determine Tomato aficionados, three sequels weremade after the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, the first of them featuring a young George Clooney no less, so there’s some motivation for you to get up to speed on Tomato lore.

Star rating: Three out of five
