The 90’s was a special era; especially in Sri Lanka. It was a time when internet access was sketchy and most often the only music outlet one had with the world was the radio. So whatever songs that were played on air the most became our favorites by default. These include tunes from the ‘Backstreet Boys’, ‘Spice Girls’, ‘N Sync’, ‘Next’, ‘Boy Zone’, ‘Ace of Base’ etc.
Red Fm’s I Love the 90’s party celebrated this quizzical period with a considerable bang. The Blue Elephant at the Hilton Colombo was packed with fans of the 90’s. Interestingly they weren’t all 30 and over, in fact the floor was partially full of a much younger crowd. “Are you kidding me? I LOVE the nineties! nineties music is so awesome!” claimed 22 year old Sharika, a recent graphic design graduate. An advantage of an event like this is it’s enjoyable at any age.
The ambience was indeed overwhelming. There were several of those who stuck too styles and fashion of the designated period. The quintessential casual look was sported by a selected few and of course a special note must be made of the natives and non natives who were imitating appearances of hip hop artists. All in all most of the guests themselves had taken that extra effort to look theme oriented; a compliment for the hosts.
If there is one significant factor that could emphasize the theme, that would be the music offered at the party. The DJ played an assortment of 90’s hits that made the crowd go wild. The music varied from the infamous “Quit playing games with my heart” to the memorable “All that she wants”.
However when the “Macarena” was played nearly everyone on the dance floor attempted to produce its signature moves in their own way. Asking the DJ his thoughts of the night so far, he said “We have just started and looked how packed it is. I’m very happy with the turnout”
The music however didn’t only stick to familiar radio hits. The Dj teased the audience with a couple of Indian numbers as well. “I’m not sure why he did that. But it worked with this crowd” observes 25 year old Thirsha enthusiastically “Everyone seems to be having a good time!”.
Despite the positive feedback from most guests a soul who wished to remain anonymous said “Everything is done well. The only criticism I have is that I wish there was some kind of 90’s like party décor that would have made the party even better”
It’s a challenging task to pull off any kind of thematic party. But it seemed like the organizers have managed to do so with crowds continuously entering the event despite questionable weather patterns. Clearly Red FM has kept its promise by offering Sri Lankans an original kind of experience. It’s certain that everyone who attended this celebration didn’t leave without fondly reminiscing about the good old nineties.
